Job description

Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand – Permanent full‑time position – Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Cardiologist to provide inpatient and outpatient cardiology care across the Northland region. Based in Whangārei, this role will involve travelling to and working from our rural hospitals as needed.

Whangārei Hospital is the largest hospital in Northland, providing secondary care services across the region and supported by our rural hospitals in Dargaville, Bay of Islands and Kaitaia. Advanced Trainees, Registrars, Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists working alongside our team of Specialist, playing key roles in the delivery of cardiology services and care.

Whangārei hospital has an on‑site cardiac catheter lab performing coronary intervention, service provision for cardiac MRI, cardiac CT, transthoracic echocardiogram (including TOE and stress echo) and well‑developed heart failure and cardiac rehab services. Pacing/device clinics based in Whangārei cover the region but currently implants are undertaken in Auckland. A priority of the cardiology service future plan is to take responsibility for inpatients and an on‑call requirement will be required to support this.

As a Cardiologist, you will join a small but close‑knit team dedicated to their patients. You will collaborate with the Clinical Lead to ensure your knowledge and skills are consistently developed. Our expectation is that you will bring your specialist experience and embrace the challenges involved in developing the service to its maximum potential. We want a motivated team player that is patient focused to play a key part in the continued development of a re‑invigorated cardiology service.

A clinical trial centre has been recently set up in Whangārei with opportunity now available to be involved in local clinical research. You will be able to make meaningful decisions and improve access to specialist cardiac care for a region that has historically been underserved.

About the Location

As well as a warm climate, the winterless north offers excellent schools; affordable housing and scenic coastal areas offering a range of recreational activities. We are just a two hours' drive or 25-minute flight from the international hub of Auckland.

About you

To be considered you must have or be eligible for specialist (or locum tenens) registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) in an Internal Medicine Vocational scope of practice.

Essential to this role is general cardiology experience and competent in echocardiography including TOE. Those with pacemaker implant skills and knowledge would be encouraged to apply as this would be considered advantageous. Recent FRACP NZ trainees are strongly encouraged to apply.

If you are currently overseas / not yet registered, we can assist you with the application process to obtain MCNZ registration.
