About the Role

We are looking for a Health Care Assistant to join our Renal Department on a permanent basis. This position is based in Ballantyne House, where you will support the Renal Physiologist and Nursing team in caring for patients attending the clinic and receiving dialysis treatment.

As a Renal Technical Associate / Health Care Assistant, you’ll provide a mix of clinical, technical, and administrative support to ensure safe, high-quality care for people receiving renal services. You’ll assist with patient comfort and day‑to‑day clinical tasks under delegation, support the setup and cleaning of dialysis equipment, help monitor water quality, and contribute to smooth patient flow and documentation management.

This is a handson, rewarding role where your work will directly support the wellbeing of our renal patients and the efficiency of the wider multidisciplinary team.

About the Team/Service/ Location

You’ll be part of the dedicated Renal Service at Hawkes Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital, working primarily within Ballantyne House. Our service supports patients who require dialysis and ongoing renal care, and operates within a collaborative environment that values teamwork, cultural safety, and whānau‑centred care. You’ll work alongside Renal Physiologists, Registered Nurses, medical staff, and allied health colleagues who are committed to delivering excellent, compassionate care.

About you

As a Renal Health Care Assistant, you will bring:

  • A NZ Certificate in Health & Wellbeing (Level 3) in Health Assistance, or commitment to completing it shortly after starting
  • Ability to follow direction, work within delegated tasks, and maintain patient confidentiality
  • Respectful, culturally safe communication, including understanding of tikanga and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Sensitivity to the needs of patients and whānau, with strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Confidence working with medical equipment and completing technical tasks once trained
  • Basic computer skills and adaptability in a busy and changing clinical environment
  • Physical capability for the demands of the role (e.g., kneeling, squatting, stair climbing, lifting)
