Governance Advisor - Fixed Term

21 Aug 2026

Te Tūranga | About the role

Do you enjoy bringing structure, accuracy and calm organisation to important work? We’re looking for a Governance Advisor to join our team on a fixed-term basis until June 2027, providing parental leave cover.

This is a great opportunity to build your governance skills and gain valuable experience in a local government setting. You’ll support Council, committee and advisory group meetings by preparing agendas, taking accurate minutes, managing meeting processes and making sure decisions are clearly captured and followed through.

Governance experience would be ideal, but we know experienced governance professionals can be hard to find. For this fixed-term opportunity, we’re open to shaping the mix of work around the successful candidate’s skills and experience, while making sure duties that require specialist governance knowledge are matched appropriately. If you’ve worked in local government, supported high-level committees, managed formal meetings, or held a role where process, accuracy and confidentiality were key, we’d still love to hear from you.

You’ll work with elected members, senior leaders, Council staff and external stakeholders, so you’ll need to be confident, organised, quick to pick things up and comfortable juggling competing priorities in a fast-moving environment.

Ngā Pukenga | What you’ll need to succeed

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:

  • strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy, especially when taking minutes
  • a process-driven approach and confidence working with legislative or formal meeting requirements
  • clear, confident communication with a wide range of people
  • the ability to manage competing priorities and keep things on track
  • curiosity, adaptability and a willingness to learn
  • good judgement, professionalism and a calm, practical approach
  • experience in governance, local government, committee support, executive support or a similar environment

Most importantly, you’ll be reliable, adaptable and keen to contribute to a team that plays an important role in supporting good decision-making for our city.

If you’re ready to grow your skills, step into a varied role and see local government in action, we’d love to hear from you.

At Tauranga City Council, our work has a direct impact on the city and the people who call it home. From planning for growth to delivering everyday services, our teams help shape a city we can all be proud of.

If you’re collaborative, community minded and looking for meaningful work, you’ll find opportunity here.

We offer a supportive, flexible workplace, including 5 weeks’ annual leave, flexible hours and career development opportunities.
