Job summary

GeoSolve Ltd. in Auckland seeks a geotechnical engineer to design and oversee investigations supporting safe infrastructure.

You will gain hands-on experience across the project lifecycle while mentoring junior staff on diverse projects, from landslip remediation to foundation design for multi-storey developments. You will analyze data, prepare reports, design foundations and pavement structures, and liaise with clients and contractors to ensure integrated designs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum 3–5 years' post-graduate geotechnical engineering experience.
  • Proficiency with WALLAP, Slide/SlopeW, Plaxis and MS Office.
  • Strong soil mechanics and ground investigation knowledge.
  • Registration as an engineer or working towards registration is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct site investigations with soil sampling, lab tests and in situ testing.
  • Analyse geotechnical data and produce reports with foundation and slope stability recommendations.
  • Design geotechnical solutions including foundations, retaining structures and ground improvement.
  • Perform calculations and modelling using geotechnical software and engineering principles.
  • Design pavement structures and assess maintenance or rehabilitation strategies.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors and other disciplines to integrate geotechnical requirements.
  • Prepare specifications, method statements and QA documentation.
  • Supervise on-site works to verify compliance with designs.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to team capability development.
  • Ensure work complies with health, safety and environmental regulations.

Join GeoSolve's growing Auckland team and work alongside our Principal Engineer who will provide direct mentorship and support your professional development. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a diverse range of challenging projects, including landslip remediation, ground improvement solutions, coastal cliff stability assessments, complex expert witness investigations, major heritage redevelopment projects and innovative foundation design for multi-storey developments. With a rapidly expanding workload and a strong pipeline of high-profile projects, you'll gain hands‑on experience across the full project lifecycle while helping shape the future of GeoSolve's Auckland office.

Our pavements division is the largest roading survey group in New Zealand working on NZTA highways and local authority roads, airports and ports. Our team is rapidly growing from national to international projects, including research, development and implementation of new technologies for testing pavements. There will also be opportunities to work with in the pavements team.

Job purpose:

Work closely with our Principal Geotechnical Engineer in Auckland to design and oversee geotechnical investigations and design engineering solutions to support safe and sustainable infrastructure and construction projects.

Specific duties and responsibilities:
  • Plan and conduct site investigations, including soil sampling, laboratory testing and in situ testing to characterise ground conditions
  • Analyse geotechnical data and produce technical reports with recommendations for foundation design, slope stability and ground improvement
  • Design geotechnical solutions such as foundations, retaining structures, embankments and ground stabilisation methods
  • Undertake calculations and modelling using geotechnical software and engineering principles
  • Design pavement structures using appropriate materials and methodologies, considering traffic loads, environmental conditions and cost-effectiveness
  • Conduct pavement condition assessments and recommend maintenance or rehabilitation strategies
  • Liaise with clients, contractors and other engineering disciplines to ensure geotechnical and pavement requirements are integrated into project designs
  • Prepare technical specifications, method statements and quality assurance documentation
  • Supervise and inspect geotechnical and pavement works on site to verify compliance with design specifications
  • Contribute to tender submissions and project proposals
  • Maintain professional knowledge of geotechnical standards, codes of practice and industry developments
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to team capability development
  • Ensure all work complies with relevant health, safety and environmental regulations
Experience and education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum 3-5 years' post-graduate experience in geotechnical engineering
  • Proficiency with geotechnical analysis software including WALLAP, Slide/SlopeW, Plaxis and Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics, foundation engineering and ground investigation techniques
  • Knowledge of relevant geotechnical standards and design codes
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Professional registration or working towards registration as an engineer (desirable)
  • Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to site locations
