Job description
  • Take the next step in your General Medicine career in beautiful New Zealand
  • Opportunities available across the country
  • Enjoy a flexible and healthy work-life balance

Achieving the best health outcomes for New Zealand communities starts with expecting the best from ourselves. We ensure every member of our team has the opportunity to develop, grow and stay inspired. Here, you can make an impact on your community and on your own professional development, all whilst enjoying a flexible and healthy work-life balance.

About the role

With a publicly funded healthcare system, diverse clinical experience, and a welcoming team environment, Junior Doctors – referred to as Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) in New Zealand – will find a place to thrive professionally and personally.

Do you want the opportunity to explore and nurture your subspecialty interests? Consultants work closely with our Registrars to deliver patient‑focused care while providing high‑quality teaching. Across our different hospitals, we manage thousands of inpatient and outpatient encounters each year, offering a rich and diverse clinical experience.

Some of the best aspects of this role include the following:
  • Diverse patient interactions: As a General Medicine Registrar, you get to interact with a wide variety of patients with different conditions and backgrounds. This diversity keeps the job dynamic and interesting.
  • Intellectual challenge: You’re often at the forefront of diagnosing complex or uncommon conditions. The problem‑solving and critical‑thinking required can be very satisfying.
  • Variety of conditions: General Medicine involves a wide range of medical services including endocrinology, cardiology, respiratory, and more. This variety keeps the workday interesting and allows you to continually expand your knowledge.
  • Comprehensive care: General Medicine Registrars focus on the whole patient, rather than just one specific organ or system. You’re responsible for ensuring that all aspects of a patient’s health are considered, from mental health to physical wellness, which is deeply satisfying for those who enjoy taking a holistic approach to care.
About you
Our ideal candidate will have the following:
  • Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand or be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. You can check your eligibility for registration by visiting the Council's website at www.mcnz.org.nz.
  • Whilst we are interested in receiving applications from those with Medical Registrar experience, RMOs with a minimum of one year post‑qualification experience and good exposure to general medical runs can apply.

It is a requirement of the Medical Council of New Zealand that your qualifications be approved through EPIC. If you have a commitment to working in New Zealand, it is highly recommended that you start this process as soon as possible to allow your subsequent registration to be undertaken in a timely fashion. For more information, please visit the MCNZ website re EPIC Credentialing.

Salary and benefits

RMOs are employed under one of two collective agreements – the STONZ (Specialist Trainees of New Zealand) or RDA (Resident Doctors’ Association) MECA – depending on their membership.

Our RMOs enjoy a comprehensive package of allowances, penal rates, and leave entitlements designed to support wellbeing, recognise additional responsibilities, and provide flexibility throughout the training journey. This includes penal rates for nights, weekends, and public holidays, higher duties allowances when stepping into senior roles, and on‑call or after‑hour pay.

Eligible roles may also offer meal and travel allowances, as well as relocation support. In addition, RMOs receive generous leave benefits, including five weeks of paid annual leave, 12 paid public holidays (with time in lieu when rostered on), and a minimum of ten days’ paid sick leave each year. Paid and unpaid parental leave is provided in line with legislation and the MECA, alongside study, exam, and professional development leave for those who are eligible.

Base salary range
  • Registrars/Senior Registrars salaries range from $62.3K USD to $87.2K USD ($109.5K NZD – $155.3K NZD)
