Job description

New Zealand Alpine Club – Christchurch, South Island

This is a rare opportunity to play a Senior role in leading an organisation at the heart of New Zealand's climbing community - small enough that your work has visible, immediate impact, and part of a 130+ year legacy shaping the next generation of Kiwi climbers.

About Us

Established in 1891, the New Zealand Alpine Club (NZAC) is New Zealand's largest not-for-profit climbing club, with a community of 4,500+ members across 12 Sections nationwide. We foster climbing, inspire and educate climbers, and enable a vibrant, sustainable climbing community - while revering and conserving the maunga, crags and alpine areas we all love. Based at either our Home of Climbing in Christchurch, or remotely; our small national office team supports a nationwide network of volunteers, hut wardens, the Board and Section committees.

The Role

We're looking for a Leader who can do more than keep the wheels turning. This role calls for someone who can turn Board-approved strategy into real, delivered outcomes — bringing fresh thinking to our systems and processes, and bringing our Board, Section committees and volunteers along on that journey. It's a balance; respecting 130+ years of heritage while having the confidence to lead change.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Leading strategy execution and Annual Plan delivery in partnership with the Board
  • Overseeing operations - publications, instruction programmes and member services
  • Managing financial performance and growing revenue through partnerships and funding
  • Leading the accommodation and hut network - safety, compliance and long-term sustainability
  • Developing and leading a small, high-performing national office team and a strong volunteer network
  • Representing NZAC externally - advocacy, iwi and hapū partnerships, collaborating with relevant sector stakeholders and our national events programme
About You
  • Senior leadership experience, ideally within a not-for-profit or volunteer-led organisation
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen, including budgeting and forecasting
  • Experience working alongside volunteers and governance bodies
  • A resilient, empowering leadership style - you bring people with you
  • Genuine affinity for the outdoors and climbing is desirable
What We Offer
  • Flexibility - open to hybrid working and whilst the preference for the role is to be Christchurch based, remote working from other parts of the country will be considered for the right candidate

If you're looking for a leadership role where you can make a lasting impact while helping shape the future of a purpose-driven organisation, we'd love to hear from you!

Unique opportunity to step into a Leadership role for a not-for-profit, with a 130+ year legacy shaping the next generation of Kiwi climbers!
