Southern Cross Healthcare – Christchurch, South Island is seeking a Facilities Assistant to support the Facilities Manager in maintaining the hospital’s buildings, grounds, and essential plant and equipment. You’ll perform hands-on maintenance, coordinate contractors, monitor equipment and help keep facilities safe and compliant.

This full-time role is based at our Christchurch Hospital, offering a hands-on path to broaden technical capability across HVAC, pumps, boilers, and hospital

Qualifications

• Experience in building maintenance, facilities, or a building/engineering trade.
• Hands-on maintenance and basic troubleshooting.
• Know when specialist support or contractors are required.
• Good organisational skills for day-to-day maintenance.
• Experience using computer systems and recording maintenance data.
• Proactive attitude and willingness to learn.
• Strong communication with hospital teams and contractors.

Looking to build your career in facilities management while working in one of New Zealand's leading private hospitals?

As our Facilities Assistant, you'll work alongside an experienced Facilities Manager to help maintain the hospital's buildings, grounds, and essential plant and equipment. This is a hands‑on role where no two days are the same, you'll carry out routine maintenance, coordinate contractors, monitor equipment, and help ensure our facilities remain safe, compliant, and operating at their best.

It's an excellent opportunity for someone with maintenance, trade, or facilities experience who enjoys solving problems and wants to broaden their technical capability across building systems including HVAC, pumps, boilers, generators, BMS controls and hospital infrastructure.

This is a full‑time position based in our Christchurch Hospital

• Experience in building maintenance, facilities, or a building, engineering, or mechanical trade
• Practical hands‑on experience carrying out routine maintenance and troubleshooting basic building issues
• The ability to identify maintenance issues and know when specialist support or contractors are required
• Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise day‑to‑day maintenance requirements
• Experience using computer systems and maintaining accurate maintenance and equipment records
• A proactive attitude, with a genuine willingness to learn and develop your technical capability
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with hospital teams and contractors

Highly regarded

• Knowledge of building services such as HVAC, pumps, boilers or similar plant equipment
• Exposure to Building Management Systems (BMS), controls or building automation systems
• Experience working in a healthcare, hospital, commercial or complex facilities environment
