Job summary

New Zealand Defence Force is seeking an Engineer (Enterprise Applications) to drive the transition from on-premise Exchange to a secure, scalable Exchange Online and M365 environment in Canterbury. You will support planning, configuration, migration, and ongoing operations while maintaining compliance and high availability for enterprise email services.

You will work with M365 architects, security teams and network staff to ensure smooth coexistence in hybrid states and to implement runbooks,

Qualifications

• Experience in messaging infrastructure roles, preferably Exchange Online migrations.
• Understanding of Exchange hybrid configurations, mail flow, and security controls.
• Experience with multi-tenant or complex Exchange Online migrations and hybrid deployments.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Purview retention policies and identity lifecycle automation.
• Proficiency with Entra ID (Azure AD) and Defender for Office 365 in regulated environments.

Responsibilities

• Assist planning, configuration, migration and operational readiness of moving from on-premises Exchange to Exchange Online.
• Manage coexistence during hybrid states with minimal disruption to users and processes.
• Develop and document runbooks, policies, and automation for Exchange Online administration.
• Resolve complex routing, mail flow, retention, and identity-related issues.
• Collaborate with M365 architects, security leads and network teams for seamless integration.
