Emergency Physician, Palmerston North Hospital, Permanent Fulltime
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.
About the role
You'll be joining a vibrant team of Emergency Physicians from all corners of the globe, alongside clinical nurse specialists and two nurse practitioners. We supervise 24 resident medical officers (a mix of registrars and senior house officers), plus sixth-year medical students from the University of Otago.
Our department is currently Tier 1 accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM). We run a well-established teaching programme for the Part I ACEM exam and are keen to build a robust Part II programme. Each week includes protected teaching time, with sessions in our simulation centre for registrars, house officers, and students.
About the service
Palmerston North Hospital ED sees around 48,000 adult and paediatric presentations annually, with an admission rate of approximately 30%. We're an Australasian Level 4 ED and a regional trauma centre, with a higher-than-average trauma workload due to agricultural injuries and road accidents from the state highways crossing our region. Our trauma team operates 24/7, and we've recently refined our trauma and disaster protocols in collaboration with surgical and anaesthetic colleagues.
We have access to all acute services on-site, except for neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and plastic surgery—patients requiring these are transferred to Wellington or Hutt Hospital.
