Job summary

Skills Group in Nelson is seeking an Electrical Tutor to support student learning through hands-on teaching and effective knowledge transfer. You will deliver training for apprentices and industry courses, assess progress, and help learners achieve employable skills.

You will foster engagement, provide coaching and academic guidance, and contribute to improving teaching practices and learning materials. A safe training environment and strong safety culture are expected.

Qualifications

  • NZ Electrical Registration is essential.
  • Strong practical experience in the electrical industry.
  • Experience in tertiary teaching or training is desirable.
  • Holding Unit Standard 4098 or willingness to obtain it.
  • Strong student engagement, coaching and communication.
  • Good organisational skills and MS Office proficiency.
  • Ability to work independently within a regional team.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging electrical training across apprentice blocks and industry courses.
  • Assess learner progress, mark within required timeframes, use approved resources.
  • Coach and guide learners to support studies and future careers.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of programme delivery and materials.
  • Maintain a safe, well-equipped training environment for learning.
  • Model and promote health and safety, report incidents and hazards.

Skills Group is seeking a dedicated Electrical Tutor based in Nelson to support student learning and achievement through effective transfer of knowledge, course facilitation and student assessment.

This is an exciting opportunity to deliver hands‑on learning and support learners to gain skills that lead to real employment.

What you'll be doing:
  • Deliver engaging, industry-relevant electrical training across apprentice block and industry courses.
  • Assess learner progress, complete marking within required timeframes, and deliver teaching in line with approved learning resources.
  • Support learners through coaching, encouragement, and academic guidance to help them succeed in their studies and future careers.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of programme delivery, teaching practice, and learning materials.
  • Maintain a safe, organised, and well‑equipped training environment that supports effective learning.
  • Model and promote excellent health and safety practice, including timely reporting of incidents, hazards, and near misses.
What you'll bring:
  • NZ Electrical Registration is essential (Full Practising Licence, Inspector's Licence or Electrical Engineering Degree).
  • Strong practical experience within the electrical industry.
  • Experience in tertiary teaching or training is desirable, and development will be provided.
  • Hold Unit Standard 4098, or be willing to obtain it with Skills Group's support as part of your professional development.
  • Strength in student engagement, coaching and communication.
  • Good organisational skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a regional team.
