Job summary

WM New Zealand is seeking a Data Science Intern to join our Data & Analytics team for a hands-on internship focused on real-world AI/ML research and development. You will work with our modern data platform to explore foundational AI applications and develop proof-of-concept solutions that shape future technology strategies.

Responsibilities include exploratory data analysis, developing ML models, evaluating methodologies, and presenting findings to stakeholders.

Qualifications

Students studying at NZQA level 6–10.
Minimum 30 hours/week, maximum 400 hours.
Immigration status to work in New Zealand.
Not previously employed by WM New Zealand in a full-time position.
Not more than two R&D Experience grant internships with WM New Zealand.

Responsibilities

Conduct exploratory data analysis and research AI/ML applications.
Develop and prototype machine learning models with appropriate algorithms.
Research and evaluate emerging AI/ML methodologies and tools.
Build proof-of-concept solutions demonstrating potential AI/ML value.
Collaborate with Data & Analytics to leverage Snowflake, dbt, Azure Data Factory for AI/ML.
Document research findings, model performance, and recommendations.
Present outcomes to business stakeholders and technical teams.
Develop evaluation metrics and testing frameworks for AI/ML solutions.
