Job summary

Oranga Tamariki is seeking a Youth Justice Coordinator in Gisborne to lead Family Group Conferences and coordinate services for tamariki and rangatahi. You will partner with whānau, victims, police and the Youth Court to ensure accountability while prioritising restorative outcomes.

You will apply a mana-enhancing approach, leverage community networks, and work across the region, with travel as needed. The role demands strong facilitation, ethical practice and cross-cultural understanding.

Qualifications

  • Strong community youth networks and ability to build trusted relationships with tamariki, rangatahi, whānau, professionals and victims.
  • Excellent facilitation skills to plan, meet timeframes, identify supports and apply FGC standards and practices.
  • Proven experience working with youth aged 12–18 years.
  • Self-directed, able to manage workload and produce clear reports.
  • Uphold te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and demonstrate in practice.
  • Understanding of cross-cultural practices; knowledge of tikanga and Pacific cultures.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Family Group Conferences (FGCs) in line with the 1989 Act.
  • Collaborate with tamariki, rangatahi, whānau and the wider community to address underlying causes of offending.
  • Work with victims, police and Youth Court to uphold victims' and public interests.
  • Incorporate mana-enhancing and restorative approaches using community resources.
  • Travel to other areas in the region as required.

Mō te tūnga | About the role:

As a Youth Justice Coordinator, you will be responsible for managing Family Group Conferences (FGCs) in accordance with the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989. You will work with tamariki and rangatahi, whĉnau and the wider community to address the underlying causes which have led to the offending of tamariki and rangatahi.

You will be responsible for working alongside victims, the police and the Youth Court to ensure that rangatahi are held accountable and the interests of victims and the public are upheld.

You will be able to incorporate a mana enhancing and restorative approach within your practice and utilise the combined knowledge of community resources, networks, and opportunities. The work you do will contribute to create an alternative offending-free future for tamariki and rangatahi. This role may require you to travel to other areas in our region.

To be considered for this role, you will need to be a dynamic, agile and fast paced coordinator who has a well-developed experience in front line delivery and the ability to build strong strategic relationships. Additionally, you will have:

  • Strong community youth networks with an ability to connect and build strong trusting relationships with tamariki, rangatahi, whĉnau, youth justice professionals, the community and victims of offending.
  • Strong facilitation skills with the ability to plan, meet timeframes identify appropriate supports and apply relevant FGC (family group conference) standards, legislation and practices throughout this process
  • Proven experience working with youth aged between 12 to 18 years
  • Ability to self-direct and manage own workload with clear communication - including strong report writing skills
  • Ability to uphold the principles of Te tiriti ō Waitangi and demonstrating this in practice
  • Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural practices in particular; knowledge of tikanga ō, and Pacific peoples' culture
