Job summary

Downer is seeking a Contract Engineer to oversee construction activities on-site in Auckland, balancing site delivery with quality, safety and financial control while maintaining strong client relationships.

You will monitor procurement, productivity, subcontractor activity and project records, helping the team identify issues early and keep delivery on track. This role combines site work with commercial responsibilities in a dynamic project environment.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification or equivalent in engineering or business management.
• At least two years' construction experience.
• Strong planning, coordination and problem-solving skills.
• Understanding of quality assurance, site safety and environmental requirements.
• Commercial awareness, including cost tracking, procurement and variation management.
• Clear communication skills with clients, crews and subcontractors.
• Proactive approach to identifying risks and addressing issues before they affect delivery.

Responsibilities

• Supporting the development of project methodologies, budgets and construction programmes.
• Completing quality inspections and maintaining accurate records for project handover.
• Coordinating inspections, sign-offs and non-conformance reporting.
• Supporting site safety through crew briefings, hazard identification, inspections and incident reporting.
• Monitoring costs, revenue and productivity across key project activities.
• Assisting with month-end claims, accruals and completed quantities.
• Identifying variations and maintaining accurate supporting cost records.
• Ensuring daily site diaries and wider contract records are completed consistently.
• Managing the allocation of people and plant, including timely plant hire and off-hire.
• Building productive relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and site teams.
• Helping crews strengthen their understanding of project requirements and quality expectations.

Reporting to the Project Manager, you'll provide on-site oversight of construction activities, ensuring work is completed in line with project specifications and management plans. You'll also monitor procurement, productivity, subcontractor activity, costs and project records, helping the team identify issues early and keep delivery on track.

You'll bring a practical understanding of construction delivery and be confident working across both site and commercial requirements. You'll be comfortable building relationships, resolving issues and keeping accurate records within a busy project environment.

Ideally, you will have:
