Job summary

Health New Zealand / Te Whatu Ora in Dunedin seeks a Diabetes Nurse to join a dynamic nursing and wider clinical team focused on improving care for patients with diabetes.

The role involves direct patient assessment, clinical consultations, teaching, participating in quality programs and providing expert nursing care across the endocrinology service, with opportunities for leadership and career development in a CNS pathway.

Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualifications are desirable; however, candidates who do not currently hold a postgraduate qualification will be supported and expected to work towards an appropriate postgraduate qualification as part of their professional development.
  • Experience in diabetes care or endocrinology is advantageous.
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and contribute to service improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Direct patient assessment and clinical consultations for diabetes patients.
  • Provide specialist nursing care and mentor other staff in endocrinology care.
  • Involve in teaching and quality improvement programs and act as a leadership resource.

About the role
  • Join a dynamic small nursing team, and broader clinical team who are committed to improving the care of patients with diabetes disease.
  • Facets of this role include direct patient assessment, clinical consultations, formal and informal teaching, participating in quality programs and leadership.
  • Providespecialist nursing care and expertise both in direct care delivery and supporting other staff in the management of Endocrinology patients/consumer groups/area of practice.
  • Collaborate across the organisation within the specialty acting in the roles of practitioner, educator, consultant, researcher, leader/change agent and care coordinator/case manager
  • Acquire expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies to prepare for extended practice within a speciality area of practice/population group.
  • Opportunity for the right candidate to advance their next steps in their career trajectory of becoming a Diabetes Nurse Practitioner Candidate.
  • We also welcome applications from registered nurses with a strong interest in Diabetes management and a commitment to developing their practice in this speciality. The right candidate may be endorsed for a Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist Pathway, with the support to undertake postgraduate study, clinical development and mentorship to achieve CNS level practice.
