Job description

Awanui Labs is a part of Awanui Group, the largest network of human and veterinary pathology laboratories in New Zealand. At Awanui, we are proud to be a national network of 25 laboratories, 150 collection centres, and employers of over 2,200 people throughout Aotearoa. Our team of specialist pathologists, scientists, technicians, phlebotomists, couriers, and shared services personnel deliver a world class service that together collects, analyzes, and reports over 7 million patient results annually.

About the Role

We are seeking a Clinical Microbiologist to join our team in a permanent part-time role, based in Auckland.

As a large community laboratory serving a population of over 1.6 million people, Awanui Labs Auckland provides services to more than 330 medical practices and works closely across the wider Awanui network. The Auckland laboratory currently covers the Northland and Auckland regions, with future growth expected to include additional regional laboratories, supporting community services while maintaining strong relationships with clinicians and public health providers.

In this role, you will join a friendly team of two microbiologists, alongside a broader network of microbiology colleagues across Awanui. The service operates across multiple locations with integrated support, including remote coverage for smaller satellite and regional laboratories, both for routine work and accreditation purposes. Our laboratories utilise a single laboratory information system (LIS), and we are well advanced in microbiology procedures and practices, enabling effective collaboration and shared resourcing across the network.

Key Responsibilities:
  • You will share responsibility for delivering routine and urgent microbiology and infectious serology reporting within a large community laboratory, operating with a strong commitment to diagnostic stewardship. It also includes supporting technical and pre-analytical staff, engaging with referrers, and contributing to the operational team.
  • Provide leadership and professional support to scientific staff, with a focus on education, training, and capability development.
  • Promote best practice, efficient workflows, and consistent network-wide policies in collaboration with clinical leadership.
About You

To be successful in this role you need to:

  • Have a medical degree recognised by the Medical Council of New Zealand and a post graduate Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, or a qualification deemed equivalent by the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • Experience in clinical community or hospital laboratories is preferred; we are well placed to support an early career microbiologist within our network.
  • Demonstrate commitment to providing high-quality pathology services and maintain continuous professional development.
  • Excellent teamwork, collaboration and flexibility is essential as our network grows and adapts to the needs of New Zealand.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.

If you do not yet have your registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand and the RCPA, we will also consider candidates who are in the process of becoming qualified.

Our three core values guide us in creating an inclusive and respected workplace where everyone can thrive and make a meaningful difference:
