Job description

  • Welcoming civil engineers with consultancy experience, from those with two years’ experience through to intermediate and senior engineers.
  • Make a local impact through varied civil infrastructure and resilience projects.
  • Enjoy flexible working and the Hawke’s Bay lifestyle, with relocation support where applicable.

Help shape resilient communities across Hawke’s Bay

We’re looking for two Civil Engineers to join our Napier team and contribute to projects that support thriving, resilient local communities. We welcome applications from engineers with at least two years’ relevant civil engineering experience in a New Zealand consultancy environment, including those ready to take their next career step and more experienced engineers at the Intermediate or Senior level looking to broaden their impact.

This role is ideal for someone with a foundation in civil engineering who is ready to broaden their consulting experience, grow their technical capability and develop client relationships. Whether you’re building on your first two years in the profession or bringing more established experience, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers, scientists, planners and project managers.

As a Civil Engineer, you’ll support the delivery of practical, innovative solutions across civil infrastructure and land development projects. Depending on your experience, you’ll contribute to design, reporting, construction support, contract administration and stakeholder engagement, with support as you develop your capability and take on greater responsibility.

You’ll have the opportunity to work across projects including flood protection and river engineering, land development and subdivisions, three waters infrastructure, roading and transport, coastal protection, resilience initiatives and public infrastructure upgrades.

This position is full-time and based in our Napier office, with the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work across Hawke’s Bay and beyond. For the right person, relocation support may be available to help make the move as smooth as possible.

Why Hawke’s Bay

Hawke’s Bay offers an enviable lifestyle, with a relaxed coastal pace, sunny climate, vibrant food and wine scene, and easy access to beaches, cycle trails, markets and outdoor adventures. From Napier’s Art Deco charm and waterfront cafés to nearby vineyards, Te Mata Peak and weekend escapes across the region, it’s a place where you can build a meaningful career while enjoying a genuinely balanced lifestyle.

What you’ll do
  • Support the delivery of civil infrastructure, land development, three waters, transport and resilience projects.
  • Contribute to civil design, calculations, technical assessments, specifications and design documentation.
  • Prepare clear, high-quality technical reports and project deliverables with guidance appropriate to your experience.
  • Assist with construction monitoring, contract administration and project coordination.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across T+T.
  • Support engagement with clients, councils, contractors and community stakeholders.
  • Contribute to proposals, business development and client relationships where appropriate to your experience level.
  • Contribute to a positive team culture, sharing knowledge and supporting others where appropriate.

We’re interested in hearing from people who enjoy solving practical engineering challenges and want to make a meaningful contribution to the communities they work in. You don’t need experience across every project area listed above.

You’ll bring:

  • At least two years’ relevant civil engineering experience in a New Zealand consultancy environment,
  • A degree in Civil Engineering
  • Experience contributing to civil infrastructure, land development, three waters, roading, transport or resilience projects.
  • Communication, stakeholder engagement and teamwork skills
  • A practical, solutions-focused mindset and a commitment to technical excellence and continuous learning.

Experience with construction monitoring and contract administration, or progress towards chartership, would be an advantage but is not essential. If you have at least two years’ relevant civil engineering experience in a New Zealand consultancy environment and a willingness to learn, we’d encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every other requirement.

At T+T, you’ll be supported to do meaningful work, grow your career and enjoy a range of benefits, including:

  • Relocation and settlement support where applicable.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including the option to purchase additional leave.
  • Professional development, mentoring, internal learning programmes and support toward chartership.
  • Competitive remuneration, including paid overtime as per your employment agreement.
  • A $750 annual wellbeing allowance, Sonder 24/7 wellbeing support and annual flu vaccinations.
  • Enhanced family support, including parental leave benefits and back-to-work coaching.

A supportive, inclusive culture with active social clubs and meaningful projects across New Zealand.

At Tonkin + Taylor, we help clients solve some of the most complex engineering and environmental challenges facing New Zealand. As a proudly New Zealand, employee-owned consultancy, our people are driven by technical excellence, practical problem-solving and a shared purpose to create and sustain a better world.
