What you’ll be doing

As our Technical BI Lead, you’ll play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality Business Intelligence solutions that empower NZTE to make data-informed decisions. You’ll lead two BI Analysts in the technical development and maintenance of scalable, reliable BI assets that align with NZTE’s data strategy.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading technical delivery of BI solutions, ensuring best practices in data modelling, performance optimisation, and Power BI reporting.
  • Translating business requirements into efficient, scalable SQL-based Data Marts.
  • Developing robust ETL data pipelines using SQL stored procedures to support Data Mart creation and ongoing data refreshes.
  • Applying deep expertise in SQL, Power BI, Azure SQL Server, Azure Data Factory, Synapse, and Analysis Services.
  • Designing and implementing data structures using Kimball Dimensional Modelling techniques.
  • Ensuring data quality and integrity through robust validation and cleansing practices.
  • Collaborating with Data Engineers, Enterprise Systems Engineers, and business stakeholders to deliver comprehensive BI solutions.
  • Providing hands‑on technical leadership and mentorship to BI Analysts.
  • Evaluating and implementing emerging technologies such as Microsoft Fabric to future‑proof NZTE’s BI environment.
What you’ll need to be successful

To thrive in this role, you’ll bring:

  • At least four years of relevant technical experience in Business Intelligence, ideally within the Microsoft stack.
  • Advanced SQL skills and deep experience with Power BI.
  • Experience in developing ETL data pipelines using SQL stored procedures or other tools.
  • Strong knowledge of Kimball Dimensional Modelling, particularly Star Schema design. Knowledge of Data Vault modelling is preferable.
  • Familiarity with source control tools such as Git is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Visual Studio, Azure DevOps, Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Purview is an advantage.
  • Excellent solution design and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
  • A self‑directed, adaptable approach with a commitment to continuous improvement.
