Auckland Council is seeking an Associate General Counsel Commercial, a senior commercial lawyer who will lead the council’s Commercial legal team. You will provide strategic leadership across corporate, commercial, infrastructure, finance and development matters for the Council and its entities.

This is an exceptional and rare opportunity to take on a senior legal leadership role at the heart of Tāmaki Makaurau’s largest and most complex public organisation.
As Associate General Counsel Commercial, you will lead Auckland Council’s Commercial legal team, providing strategic legal leadership across a broad portfolio of corporate, commercial, infrastructure, finance and commercial development matters for council and its council-controlled organisations.
Reporting to the General Counsel, you will be the most senior commercial lawyer providing trusted and strategic legal advice to elected members, the Chief Executive, executive leadership and senior stakeholders. You will lead a team of talented legal professionals, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, practical and commercially focused legal services that support Council priorities while effectively managing legal and reputational risk.
This role offers significant scope, influence and variety. You will be a key member of the wider Ngā Ratonga Ture / Legal Services leadership team, contributing to the direction of a high-performing centre of excellence that is trusted, customer-focused and commercially astute.
From major infrastructure investment and urban development projects to strategic commercial arrangements and long-term organisational initiatives, the work of this team helps shape how Auckland grows, develops and serves its communities.
Alongside working on matters of significant scale and importance, you will develop people, build influential relationships across the organisation, and drive continuous improvement in the delivery of legal services. Your advice and leadership will help inform decisions that shape Auckland's future.

You bring deep legal expertise, strong political and organisational awareness, and the credibility to influence senior stakeholders across a large and complex organisation. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity, balancing risk with opportunity, and supporting strategic decision making in a public sector environment. elected members and governance audiences.
