Social Services

Te Oranganui is a kaupapa Māori organisation providing health, wellbeing, and social services that support whānau across Whanganui and surrounding districts. Guided by tikanga Māori, Whānau Ora, and a whānau-centred approach, we work alongside whānau to strengthen wellbeing, build capability, and achieve their aspirations.

Waiora Hinengaro provides mental health and addiction services that support tāngata whai ora and whānau on their journey towards improved wellbeing. Through a recovery-focused, strengths-based, and whānau-centred approach, the service recognises individual potential and provides support that responds to the unique needs, goals, and aspirations of tamariki, rangatahi, adults, and whānau.

Join Te Oranganui and help support tāne within Whanganui Prison to create positive and lasting change through recovery, wellbeing, and personal growth.

As our AOD Practitioner / Facilitator, you'll work alongside tāne at a pivotal point in their recovery journey. Through assessment, counselling, group facilitation, and culturally grounded interventions, you'll support participants to reduce alcohol and drug-related harm, strengthen resilience, and develop the skills needed to build healthier futures for themselves, their whānau, and their communities.

This is a rewarding opportunity to work in a unique environment where you can make a genuine difference every day. Working alongside Corrections and community partners, you'll deliver recovery-focused support that combines clinical practice, tikanga Māori, and strengths-based approaches to improve outcomes for tāne and their whānau.

This is a permanent full-time position.

You are passionate about supporting people to achieve positive change and are committed to improving outcomes for Māori. You thrive on building meaningful relationships, engaging people from diverse backgrounds, and supporting others to reach their goals.

You bring experience in the AOD sector and are confident delivering both individual and group-based interventions. You understand the importance of culturally responsive practice and can balance professionalism, empathy, and accountability in your work.

You will also have:

  • A relevant AOD qualification and current registration or practising certificate.
  • Experience delivering one-to-one and group-based interventions.
  • Knowledge of tikanga Māori and recovery-focused practice.
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • A full New Zealand driver's licence and the ability to meet security clearance requirements.

Most importantly, you'll bring a strengths-based approach, cultural humility, and a genuine commitment to supporting the wellbeing of tāne and their whānau.

  • Supportive kaupapa Māori workplace culture with opportunities to engage in karakia, waiata, kapa haka and wānanga
  • Professional development and career growth opportunities
  • Professional supervision and access to EAP services
  • Access to corporate wellbeing benefits, including discounted gym membership, plus 15 days' sick leave annually
  • Living Wage employer
