Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is seeking an Allied Health Assistant to join the inpatient wards at Waitakere Hospital on a permanent full-time basis. You will provide therapy, motivation and support to a variety of adult patients, carrying out a range of tasks to support rehabilitation.

About the Role

We currently have a permanent fulltime (1.0FTE) Allied Health Assistant position available within the inpatient wards at Waitakere Hospital. You will provide therapy, motivation and support to a variety of adult patients, carrying out a range of tasks and activities to support them in their rehabilitation journey.

This role involves working with an interdisciplinary team, supporting and assisting Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Language Therapists. You will carry out prescribed rehabilitation programmes with patients, in the therapy gym or on the wards, under the guidance of the inter-disciplinary team. These programmes will be individual to the patient and will be focused on the patients goals and may be completed with therapists, in a group session, or one to one. The programmes may include supporting patients with exercises or activities to improve their day to day function, independence and communication. Some of the things you may support a patient to do are to make their breakfast by themselves again, do balance and strength exercises, or have a supported conversation in a group session; to name a few! You will also support equipment provision as guided by therapists.

We are seeking a dedicated, honest, hard-working and reliable individual who has previous experience within a healthcare environment and working as part of a team. You must have excellent communication skills, strong time management and be proactive in your approach. You need to be able to work Monday to Friday (7.30 4.00pm or 8.00 4.30pm) and ideally must hold a current full NZ Drivers License.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The allied health inpatient team work in ward settings, alongside other team members (nurses, doctors, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers), providing therapy for people following an acute medical event, such as a stroke (all ages), fracture(s), an amputation or people needing rehabilitation following a medical illness.

About you

As an inpatient Allied Health Assistant you require:

  • Previous experience working in health - preferably in rehabilitation
  • Excellent communication verbal and written
  • Previous experience working in a team
