Job summary

Newcode.ai, a fast-growing legal tech and AI company, is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to own the retrieval pipeline and scale AI-powered document search.

You will design the search, build agentic retrieval, and ensure security and performance in Python and FastAPI, with clients across the EU.

Qualifications

• At least five years building backend systems that run in production, with at least two shipping retrieval or RAG systems used by real users.
• Diagnosed a retrieval regression in production, fixed it, and demonstrated measurable improvements with metrics.
• Experienced running a vector index in production: tuning index parameters, managing memory and latency, and reindexing without downtime.
• Strong Python skills. Comfortable with FastAPI, PostgreSQL and Redis under load.

Responsibilities

• Own the retrieval pipeline end-to-end: document parsing, embedding, indexing, and keeping it current as clients add material.
• Design and implement search combining semantic and keyword retrieval with metadata filtering and reranking.
• Build agentic retrieval: query decomposition, model tools, multi-step loops, and budget awareness.
• Develop an evaluation layer with golden sets, metrics, regression tests, and traceability to identify issues.
• Ship reliable services in Python and FastAPI with ingestion, embedding, and reindexing as background tasks.
• Ensure data security and strict tenant isolation across clients.
• Maintain retrieval performance across languages and English as a baseline.
