Qualifications

  • The MSc or equivalent must be in data science, computer science, physics, applied mathematics, oceanography, meteorology, or a similar field.
  • Admission to the PhD programme at the University of Bergen must be possible (average grade C or better).
  • Applicants must be proficient in English; working knowledge of Norwegian is beneficial.
  • Experience with Python is required; ML experience is advantageous.
  • Embedded-systems programming or electrical engineering experience is an asset.
  • Experience in signal processing, Fourier analysis, and acoustic modeling is an advantage.
  • Field work experience is an advantage; git version control experience is beneficial.
  • Independence and teamwork abilities are valued; willingness to travel up to six months for results presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop small directional buoys with telemetry for coastal applications.
  • Extend the drift modelling framework, OpenDrift, to integrate observational data with ML techniques.
  • Extend buoys with acoustic sensors and conduct field work at sea and along coast.
  • Integrate tools and datasets into the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (EDITO).
  • Support visualization tool development and open-access datasets; collaborate with international partners.
