The Lead Design Manager is responsible for the overall management and coordination of the design delivery within the project. That includes external design consultants and internal design leads. The role leads the multidisciplinary design team and ensures that design activities are properly planned, coordinated and delivered in accordance with project requirements, programme, budget and quality expectations.
The Lead Design Manager acts as the primary link between the design organisation, project management, production and other key stakeholders and ensures that the diffeent technical disciplines work together towards an integrated and buildable solution. The role has project leadership responsibility but does not carry formal line-management responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate the multidisciplinary design team across the relevant technical disciplines.
- Plan and coordinate design activities, resources, deliverables and interfaces throughout the project.
- Coordinate the allocation and utilisation of design resources in accordance with project priorities and programme.
- Establish and maintain effecive ways of working across the design disciplines.
- Coordinate technical interfaces between disciplines and ensure that design information is aligned and consistent.
- Monitor design progress, identify risks and dependencies, and take appropriate action to maintain project programme.
- Manage the design-related project budget and monitor resource utilisation and costs.
- Ensure that design deliverables meet agreed project requirements, quality standards and deadlines.
- Coordinate the resolution of issues that affet multiple disciplines or the overall design delivery.
- Work closely with production to ensure that design solutions are practical, buildable and aligned with project execution.
- Support the integration of engineering, design, procurement and production requirements.
- Act as the primary design interface towards the client and project management where appropriate.
- Escalate signifiant technical, commercial or programme issues when required.
Authority & Decision-Making
The Lead Design Manager has authority within the project to:
- Coordinate and prioritise design resources and activities.
- Establish the design delivery plan and coordinate design priorities.
- Make decisions relating to design coordination, interfaces, sequencing and delivery, within the agreed project framework.
- Manage the design budget and take action to maintain agreed cost and resource targets.
- Require actions from the design team to maintain programme, quality and coordination.
- Escalate technical decisions to the relevant Principal Engineer where specialist technical authority is required.
The Lead Design Manager does not hold fnal technical authority over specialistengineering decisions. Technical decisions within a specifi discipline remain with the relevant Principal Engineer or technical lead.
