Job summary

Booking.com, a global travel technology company, is seeking a Software Engineer (Backend) to join our backend team. You will help develop, improve performance, and scale our services and internal systems.

We value 1–3 years of software development experience and knowledge of server-side languages (Java, Perl, Python, Scala, C++), plus relational databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL). Hybrid work is offered, with a strong focus on collaboration, Git for version control, Kubernetes for containerized

Role Description:

Role Qualifications & Requirements

We are looking for motivated Software Engineers who enjoy solving problems which could benefit Booking.com’s customers; who initiate solutions and discussions and who believe that any challenge can be scaled with the right mindset and tools.

We have found that people who match the following requirements are the ones who thrive with us:

• 1-3 years of software development experience; using one or more server side programming languages. Preferably Java, Perl, Python, Scala, C++ etc.
• Demonstrable experience with MySQL and PostgreSQL or similar relational databases.
• Bachelor in Mathematics, Software Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of Git and branching strategies.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Eagerness to learn new technologies and continuously improve.
• Previous experience with distributed systems is an advantage.
• Experience working on products that impact a large customer base is an advantage.

Additional nice to have skills include:

• Proficiency in Java and frameworks like Spring and Hibernate.
• Experience with Kubernetes for container orchestration.
• Proficiency in Perl scripting is a plus.
• Experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, CircleCI).
