Job summary

Airwallex in Amsterdam is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the Payments Platform. You will build scalable infrastructure for international payments, connecting backend microservices with a React frontend, and shape next-gen payment acceptance while prioritizing reliability and merchant needs.

You’ll work in a hybrid setup, three days in the office, and collaborate with Payments Product and external partners. Strong Java/Kotlin, Spring, REST, and cloud/container experience are required.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of software engineering experience with CI/CD
• Experience delivering thoroughly tested, high-quality solutions
• Strong CS fundamentals with hands-on Java or Kotlin and Spring/Spring Boot

Responsibilities

• Design and implement new capabilities across Airwallex's international payments platform.
• Build REST services and integration components within a backend microservices architecture, connecting with our React frontend.
• Shape the next generation of Payment Acceptance infrastructure, focusing on merchant needs and business outcomes.
• Conduct architectural reviews, address technical debt, and improve operational effectiveness of current and upcoming solutions.

How you'll make impact

You'll help build the infrastructure that makes international payments reliable, scalable, and easier for businesses to accept across markets.

• Design and implement new capabilities across Airwallex's international payments platform, helping businesses accept and process payments reliably across markets.
• Build REST services and integration components within a backend microservices architecture, connecting with our React frontend.
• Shape the next generation of Payment Acceptance infrastructure, keeping merchant needs and business outcomes at the centre of your decisions.
• Conduct architectural reviews, address technical debt, and improve the operational effectiveness of current and upcoming solutions.
• Partner with the Payments Product team and, where needed, engineering teams at external partners.

You'll work in a hybrid setup, spending three days in the office.

What we're looking for

Essentials

• Over four years of experience using contemporary engineering methodologies, with an emphasis on continuous integration and quality engineering.
• Experience taking concepts from inception through implementation, with a focus on delivering thoroughly tested, high-quality solutions.
• Strong computer science fundamentals and recent hands-on experience with Java or Kotlin and Spring or Spring Boot.
• Experience designing and building REST APIs and working with high-volume distributed systems.
• Experience with Kafka event streams and distributed data storage systems such as Cassandra, Hazelcast, Oracle Coherence, or similar technologies.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS, including services such as EC2, RDS, ELB, or CloudFront.
• Experience with containerisation technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with operational tooling such as New Relic, StatsD, ELK, Datadog, or Prometheus.

Preferred

• Extensive experience developing payment gateways, acquiring platforms, issuing platforms, or equivalent payment systems.
• Experience integrating local payment methods such as iDEAL, Klarna, or Trustly.
• Experience working with major card schemes such as Visa or Mastercard.
