Job summary

ING is seeking a Senior Java Engineer to own backend solutions within Wholesale Banking Lending. You will develop secure, scalable services using Java and Spring Boot, shaping APIs and integrations while applying AI-enabled features to improve delivery.

You will mentor peers, raise engineering standards, and ensure production reliability through modern CI/CD, observability and secure practices. Hybrid working is supported in Amsterdam.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of hands-on Java backend development.
• Strong Spring Boot expertise and backend design skills.
• Experience building secure, scalable, reliable backend services.
• Proficient in REST APIs, integrations and software architecture.
• Experience with CI/CD, containerization and DTAP environments.
• Mentoring, owning outcomes and driving engineering standards.
• Familiarity with AI-enabled engineering features is a plus.

Job description

Take ownership of business-critical lending technology and help shape how AI transforms software engineering at ING. You will combine deep Java and Spring Boot expertise with technical leadership to build secure, reliable backend services used across Wholesale Banking.

The team

You will join the Wholesale Banking Lending department, working in a multidisciplinary Agile team of engineers, testers, customer journey experts and a product manager. The team develops and operates enterprise lending applications that support critical lending journeys. We combine engineering excellence with practical AI adoption. We use tools such as GitHub Copilot and agent-based development to improve delivery, while applying critical thinking, secure engineering and human accountability to every solution.

Roles and responsibilitie s

• As a Senior Java Engineer, you will take end-to-end ownership of the full stack solutions with emphasis on the backend, and raise the engineering standard across the team.
• Designing and developing scalable backend applications with Java and Spring Boot, including AI-enabled features and intelligent automation.
• Shaping technical designs, REST APIs, and integrations with other systems.
• Driving code quality through automated testing, reviews and engineering standards.
• Ensuring solutions are secure, compliant, and resilient, meeting ING's security and risk requirements.
• Improving CI/CD pipelines, containerized deployments and production reliability.
• Using and help spread AI-assisted engineering tools effectively and responsibly to improve delivery.
• Mentoring engineers, breaking down complex challenges into achievable steps, and constructively challenging ideas to drive better outcomes.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production incidents using industry-standard observability, monitoring, and logging tools.

Bring at least 8 years of recent, hands-on professional Java backend development experience.

Build and operate enterprise applications with strong Spring Boot expertise.

Apply object-oriented design, software architecture and design patterns to complex systems.

Deliver quality through unit, integration and system testing, relational databases and SQL.

Work confidently with CI/CD, containerization and DTAP environments.

Lead through ownership, clear communication, mentoring and an egoless growth mindset.
