Job summary

DEPT is seeking a well-rounded Data Engineer to translate business goals into concrete data solutions. You will collaborate with dev teams and clients to design pipelines, data models, and systems that drive business impact, applying pragmatic engineering approaches.

The role emphasizes independent research, proactive problem-solving, and mentoring peers on best practices, within a collaborative hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in core programming fundamentals and modern tools (IDE, CLI, Git)
• Experience with scripting languages such as Python or Ruby
• Competence in Java, Scala or C++
• Experience with source control systems
• 2+ years of experience with data management tools
• Exposure to pipeline tools like Airflow or Luigi or ETL tools
• DevOps tooling experience with Terraform, Kubernetes, and Docker
• Database proficiency with BigQuery, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, MySQL or similar
• 2+ years of client portfolio discovery/assessment experience
• 2+ years of professional software/consulting experience
• Experience in cloud environments (AWS or GCP) is a plus
• Unix-based OS experience is a plus

Responsibilities

• Contribute to technical design of data systems, schemas, and pipelines
• Identify and propose technical solutions aligned to business needs
• Collaborate with peers and new hires to promote best practices
• Realign client expectations when project scope changes or delays occur
• Research and learn new knowledge independently to solve tasks efficiently
• Communicate project status and priorities across teams

The Role:

We are looking for a well-rounded, flexible Data Engineer with an interest in translating business goals into concrete solutions. You’ve been part of more than one team, you’ve demonstrated initiative on most of your projects, and you can tell us in technical detail what you did to help. Ideally you’ve worked with at least one devops team, and in at least one flavor of agile. If you haven’t we won’t hold that against you. What you’ll bring:

• Ability to realign client expectations when challenges arise (delays, change in scope, etc.)

• Proactively, and independently able to research knowledge needed to perform tasks (i.e., knows when to ask for help, and doesn't spend significant time on already-solved issues)

• You have the ability to identify potential technical solutions that apply to an internal/client situation (i.e., ability to connect technical solutions to a business need).

• You enjoy working with peers / new hires to help them understand and apply best practices

• You can prioritize multiple tasks and communicate the overall status of a project.

• You enjoy participating in technical design of systems, schemas, or pipelines and offer sound guidance

What we’re looking for:

• 3+ years of experience in core programming fundamentals, modern tools (IDEs, CLI, Git/version control), and basic debugging:

• Scripting languages like Python, Ruby

• Compiled languages like Java, Scala, C++

• Source Control Systems

• 2+ years of experience in Data Management Tools:

• Pipeline management tools like Airflow or Luigi, and/or enterprise ETL tools like Informatica, SSIS or Datastage

• Devops tools like Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker

• Database Management Systems like BigQuery, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, mySQL, Oracle, MS SQL Server, Redshift

• 2+ years of discovery and assessment of a client’s portfolio, tools, and applications

• 2+ years of professional software and consulting experience

• Experience working in cloud environments (AWS or GCP) is a plus.

• Experience with Unix-based OSes a plus!
