Job summary

Medtronic is seeking an R&D Engineer I in the Netherlands to develop advanced medical devices for next‑generation surgical procedures. You will contribute from concept through verification, testing and scale‑up, spanning design, modelling, prototyping and process development.

You will join a team delivering innovative instruments and manufacturing methods, with lean six sigma approaches to improve performance and cost efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering/applied physics/Industrial Engineering or similar.
  • Mastering the Dutch and English language.
  • Hands-on mentality, eager to learn, flexible and a strong team player.
  • Looking at questions from different perspectives, daring to bring less obvious solutions and strong analytical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering analyses, calculations, and modelling to evaluate product performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Support development and optimization of manufacturing processes, including technologies such as laser cutting, laser welding, cleaning, and assembly.
  • Build and test prototypes, execute experiments, and analyse results to support design improvements and technical decision‑making.
  • Assist in designing surgical instruments and related components, supporting new product development from concept through verification and market introduction.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to ensure successful product and process development.
  • Show entrepreneurial mindset be eager to learn and dare to fail fast.

A Day in the Life As a R&D Engineer I at Medtronic Articulating Technologies, you will get the opportunity to develop advanced medical devices in order to enable next generation surgical procedures. You will gain knowledge and experience covering the full engineering domain of product and process development from conceptual design up to market introduction and scale-up. In a team of engineers, you will work on design, development and testing of surgical instruments and the development of their related manufacturing processes. You will improve product performance and manufacturability by calculating, modelling, prototyping and testing. Additionally, by developing processes to a world-class performance level by means of lean six sigma, you will help optimizing cost and consistency. Furthermore, you will get the chance to master high-tech manufacturing processes such as laser cutting, cleaning, laser welding and assembly. During the traineeship, you will be part of our talented team of specialists, and you will learn from our experts who will help you to develop yourself towards your role as Manufacturing or Research and Development Engineer.

Required Knowledge and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering/applied physics/Industrial Engineering or similar
  • Mastering the Dutch and English language
  • You have a hands-on mentality, eager to learn, flexible and a strong team player
  • Looking at questions from different perspectives, daring to bring less obvious solutions and strong analytical skills is natural for you.
