Job description

MSF is an international, independent medical humanitarian organization. We are a non-profit, self-governed worldwide movement of more than 63,000 people.

We provide emergency medical assistance during armed conflict, natural disasters, outbreaks of deadly diseases and assist those who are excluded from healthcare. MSF delivers care based on need and when we see injustice, we speak out. We are an organization that remains impartial, knowledgeable, and effective, and this is what makes the difference between life and death.

People are our priority. At Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/ Artsen zonder Grenzen, we are committed to an inclusive culture that encourages and supports the diverse voices of our employees. We encourage diverse applicants including individuals of all gender identities, ages, sexual orientations, nationalities, races, religions, beliefs, social and marital status, people with different abilities and all other diversity characteristics and how they intersect.

MSF Operational Centre Amsterdam (MSF OCA) is undergoing a reorganisation of its Finance Department. Historically organised along a split between Programs and Headquarters, Finance is moving towards an integrated, global functional model designed to better support MSF OCA's strategic direction.

With immediate effect, our Finance department is looking for a:

Process Improvement Specialist
  • Based in Amsterdam or Nairobi
  • One-year opportunity
Objective – why this role matters

This is an exciting one-year opportunity to help Finance work in a new way. As Process Improvement Specialist, you will join the new FUSE unit at an important moment in the Finance Structure Review implementation. You will help turn the new Finance model into practical ways of working by analysing detailed finance processes, understanding the underlying problem to solve, and designing practical tools and process improvements that can be handed over and sustainably used by finance teams in country programmes and HQ.

The role complements two existing Process Improvement Specialists and a Systems Support Specialist for our Country Programmes, all of whom report to the FUSE unit manager. We are particularly looking for someone with hands-on familiarity with the Microsoft landscape, including Power Automate, Power Apps, SharePoint, advanced Excel, XML, and VBA/Python. Experience implementing AI tools or Microsoft Copilot into finance processes and applications would be a strong asset. The person should be able to combine finance process understanding with systematic thinking, user focus, and the ability to design solutions that fit responsibly within MSF's existing application landscape.

Key Responsibilities

As Process Improvement Specialist, you will:

  • Analyse detailed finance processes, workflows, and application use, identifying the practical issue to solve and the most suitable improvement approach.
  • Design and build practical tools and process solutions using the Microsoft landscape, including SharePoint, Power Automate, Power Apps, advanced Excel, XML and VBA/Python where relevant.
  • Translate finance business needs into clear requirements, prototypes, tested solutions, and handover materials that can be owned and maintained by the relevant unit.
  • Work in a structured mini-project way, using agile and design-thinking approaches to clarify user needs, test options, gather feedback, and iterate towards workable solutions.
  • Ensure that new tools and process improvements fit within the existing finance and ICT application landscape, avoiding shadow IT and involving the right stakeholders early.
  • Write, update, and simplify operating procedures, guidance notes, and process documentation for finance users in country programmes and HQ.
  • Support implementation and adoption by testing solutions, preparing user guidance, training colleagues where needed, and completing clear handover to business owners.
  • Explore practical and responsible use of AI tools and Microsoft Copilot within finance applications, where this can improve efficiency, quality, documentation, or user support.
  • Contribute to FUSE as a practical, service-oriented team that combines systems knowledge, process improvement, documentation, learning support, and responsible innovation.
What We're Looking For

You are a hands-on finance process and Microsoft tools specialist who enjoys solving practical problems with and for users. You can understand a detailed finance process, identify what needs to change, and design a tool or workflow that is useful, maintainable, and properly embedded in the wider application landscape.

  • Strong developer skills within the Microsoft landscape, especially Power Automate, Power Apps, advanced Excel, XML, and VBA/Python.
  • Excel superuser capability, including the ability to structure, automate, validate, and document complex finance tools.
  • Good understanding of finance processes, controls, and the practical realities of financial work in operational environments.
  • Ability to move from problem definition to requirements, prototype, testing, implementation, documentation, and handover.
  • Design-thinking mindset, with the ability to work closely with users, understand their needs, and build solutions that are simple enough to be adopted.
  • Comfort working in small, structured, agile-style projects with clear priorities, iterations, feedback loops, and deliverables.
  • Systematic thinking within the finance domain, including the ability to understand ERP-type processes and dependencies without needing prior knowledge of MSF's specific ERPs.
  • Experience implementing AI tools or Microsoft Copilot within Microsoft environments, particularly for finance applications, is a strong asset.
  • Ability to work responsibly with stakeholders across Finance, ICT, country programmes, HQ teams, and other departments, ensuring solutions are aligned and sustainable.
  • Fluency in English required; French or another MSF working language is an asset.
  • Willingness to consider travel to MSF meetings or country programme locations.
Candidate Profile
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, information systems, business analytics, data science, or a related field.
  • Relevant experience in finance, accounting, reporting, business analysis, process improvement, systems support, or a comparable area.
  • Hands-on experience developing solutions with Microsoft tools is essential, particularly advanced Excel, VBA/Python, XML, Power Automate, and Power Apps.
  • Experience in an international or multicultural environment is an asset; experience with country programmes or decentralised organisations is particularly valuable.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who already reside in the location and hold a valid work permit. Relocation support is not provided.

An exciting one-year opportunity to help Finance work in a new way within a major international organization. You will be part of the new FUSE unit and contribute directly to practical improvements in finance processes, tools, systems, and operating procedures that support medical and humanitarian operations worldwide.
