Job summary

University of Amsterdam is seeking a PhD‑level researcher to investigate how the infant gut microbiome shapes innate immunity and pathogen interactions. You will develop gut‑on‑a‑chip platforms and organoid co‑cultures, collaborating with engineers and microbiologists at Amsterdam UMC to advance infant health.

The role requires an advanced degree in a relevant field, hands‑on experience with bioengineering and microfluidic systems, and fluency in English.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, or closely related fields.
  • Excellent background in bioengineering, biomaterials, primary cell culture, organoids, or microfluidic systems.
  • Experience or willingness to learn anaerobic microbial cultivation and characterization techniques.
  • Detail‑oriented with strong teamwork and independent working skills.
  • Fluent in English with proven academic writing and presentation experience.

Responsibilities

  • Establish an anaerobic gut‑microbiome‑on‑a‑chip platform tailored to infant gut.
  • Design and fabricate mesofluidic gut models using available facilities.
  • Co‑culture organoid epithelium, immune cells, and SynComs reflecting infant gut physiology.
  • Coordinate collaboration between engineers, microbiologists, and translational microbiome researchers at Amsterdam UMC.
  • Present findings at conferences and publish in peer‑reviewed journals.
