Qualifications

  • MSc degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied chemistry, applied physics, or a related field.
  • Experience working with energy technology and laboratory experimentation.
  • Proven experimental skills in electrochemistry or related engineering.
  • Knowledge of engineering or process technology.
  • Excellent academic record.
  • Pro-active and creative mindset.
  • Fluent in English; Dutch language skills are a plus.

Job description

Energy storage is indispensable for bridging electricity consumption with intermittent renewable energy supply. This project focuses on developing inorganic, hydrogen‑based flow batteries with high power and energy density.

The role involves demonstrating this technology at stack level, studying the configuration of alkaline H2‑I2 batteries, evaluating long‑term stability, and comparing results with other flow battery chemistries developed by partner universities and industry. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with partners across the project to evaluate technology for ultra‑long energy storage.

  • Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities: €3059–€3881 gross per month, plus 8 % holiday allowance and 8.3 % end‑of‑year bonus.
  • 4‑year PhD position with 2 contracts: an initial 1.5‑year contract followed by a 2.5‑year contract contingent on performance.
