Job summary

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the NCFun group at TU Delft in the project “Welding Made Easy.” The role focuses on designing magnetic nanoparticles with tunable Curie temperatures for smart thermoplastic interlayers in lightweight composites.

The position offers a 4‑year employment under Dutch university terms, access to state‑of‑the‑art synthesis and analytics facilities, and close collaboration with partners across Europe and industry, including Airbus and GKN.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field and strong interest in nanomaterials.
  • Experience with synthesis and characterisation of inorganic nanoparticles.
  • Familiarity with structure/magnetic characterisation techniques is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct colloidal synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles.
  • Functionalise surfaces for stable dispersion in polymer matrices.
  • Characterise structure and composition (XRD, XPS, TEM, NMR).
  • Assess magnetic properties and determine switch temperatures.
  • Link nanoparticle composition to heating performance for welding applications.
