Job summary

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) invites applications for a four‑year PhD position in environmental science focusing on Antarctic krill and salp population dynamics and carbon export in a changing climate.

You will develop stage‑structured population models, couple them to ocean‑ice‑biogeochemical frameworks, and explore climate and fishing scenarios while teaching and supervising students. The position offers competitive Dutch salary and strong research support.

Qualifications

MSc completed, or near completion, in biological or related natural sciences with strong ecology and modelling interest.
Experience with mathematical modelling and learning new computational methods.
Proficiency in English, written and spoken.
Experience with scientific writing or numerical ocean modelling is a plus.

Responsibilities

Develop stage-structured population models for krill and salps.
Couple models to an ocean-ice-biogeochemical framework to quantify carbon export.
Explore future climate and fishing scenarios to assess ecosystem functioning.
Publish results in international journals.
Contribute to teaching and supervise bachelor/master students.
Present findings at meetings and conferences.
