Job summary

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (IVM) invites applications for a PhD candidate to develop new methods for assessing climate risk due to consecutive droughts and at various scales in Europe. The project uses the GEB framework with Agent-Based Models, hydrological and flood models to simulate multi-hazard interactions and societal impacts.

You will contribute to modelling, data collection, and analysis, and interact with international project partners, presenting findings at conferences and in

Qualifications

  • MSc degree in earth science, hydrology, computer science, environmental science, or equivalent.
  • Solid scientific coding skills in Python; willingness to advance Python and HPC skills.
  • Preferably experience in hydrology and affinity with agent-based modelling and large-scale data processing with societal relevance.
  • Ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary research group.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop multi-risk simulation models for compound and consecutive floods and droughts.
  • Create new modelling tools to represent complex systemic interactions between climate, environment, society and adaptation.
  • Assess how adaptation can reduce climate risks under different climate scenarios.
  • Present research at scientific conferences and publish results in scientific journals.
  • Contribute about 10% of time to teaching and supervising bachelor and master programs.
