Job summary

UMCG invites applications for a four-year PhD position in the IMMO-VIR project. You will work with human adipose tissue from individuals with obesity to study influenza infection and replication, and how metabolic health and adipose location influence responses.

You will join an international, multidisciplinary team spanning virology, immunology and endocrinology at the University Medical Center Groningen, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and structured supervision.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in biomedical sciences or related discipline.
• Strong background in virology or immunology.
• Experience with mammalian cell culture and immunological assays.

Responsibilities

• Design and conduct experiments using human adipose tissue and influenza models.
• Investigate viral infection and replication in adipose tissue from individuals with different metabolic profiles.
• Characterise local immune responses using molecular and cellular techniques.
• Integrate data to identify mechanisms of susceptibility to infection.
• Collaborate with researchers and clinicians across the team.
• Present findings at conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
