Job summary

Space Applications Services NV/SA invites applications for a Payloads Engineer to join the ICE Cubes Service in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

The role focuses on system engineering of spacecraft payload infrastructures, coordinating with customers and suppliers, and helping extend ICE Cubes to new platforms while meeting project schedules.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in space systems, mechanical or electrical/electronic engineering or related field.
  • Experience with CAD, Avionic Design, Fluidic Systems Design and testing procedures.
  • Ability to identify COTS components for projects and manage schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in system engineering of ICE Cubes payload infrastructures, from requirements to interface control.
  • Involve in assembly, integration, validation and testing of payloads and ground models.
  • Coordinate customers in development and certification processes for ICE Cubes platforms.
  • Establish technical framework and processes for extending ICE Cubes to new platforms.
  • Liaise with suppliers, subcontractors and partner organizations.

Job description

Space Applications Services develops and operates space systems and payloads for the International Space Station. The company’s International Commercial Experiment Service is the first European provider of commercial end-to-end development, integration, delivery and operations services for users of the ISS. As ESA and NASA are transitioning to commercial space stations, replacing the International Space Station, Space Applications needs to grow its capacity to meet increasing demand in Low Earth Orbit.

Position

We are looking for a Payloads Engineer to join the International Commercial Experiment (ICE) Cubes Service, whose activities can be discovered on https://www.icecubesservice.com

The position is in the Strategic Business Unit Department, International Commercial Experiment Cubes Service (ICE Cubes) Strategic Business Unit. The candidate will mainly report to the ICE Cubes Business Unit Manager.

  • Location: Noordwijk, the Netherlands
  • Start Date: at the earliest
Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Participate in system engineering of payload infrastructures/facilities directly developed in the frame of the ICE Cubes Service: Requirements engineering and verification, System design and interface control (mechanical, electrical, electronics, software), COTS subsystem selection, procurement and qualification
  • Involvement in assembly, integration, validation and testing payloads and flight hardware, GSE and ground models
  • Coordinate customers in the process of development and certification of payloads for the platforms served by the ICE Cubes Service
  • Set up of the technical framework (documentation, processes, etc.) related to the extension of the ICE Cubes service to new platforms (e.g. external ISS platforms, free flyers, CubeSats)
  • Liaise with suppliers, subcontractors and customers and platforms organisations.
Skills and Experience
  • Master’s degree in space systems, mechanical or electrical/electronic engineering, or similar
  • Experience with/in CAD, Avionic Design, Fluidic Systems Design, Testing (procedures, runs, reports)
  • Ability of exploring the market to identify COTS components for the projects
  • Strength to cope with schedules and deadlines
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
Considered as Assets
  • Knowledge of project management
  • Familiarity with the ISS operations environment, Structural analysis
  • Assess safety aspects in the human spaceflight environment
  • Good knowledge of the ISS environment for payloads
  • ISS boundary conditions and Product Assurance & Safety (PA&S) procedures.
