Job summary

Green Energy Storage B.V. seeks a Lead Engineer to take technical ownership of major BESS projects from design through commissioning. Based at Breda, you will steer technical integrity, safety and grid compliance for projects in the Netherlands and abroad.

You will coordinate with Tier‑1 integrators and BoP contractors, define technical requirements, support permits and tenders, and mentor others while traveling between sites as needed.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of engineering experience in energy, high‑voltage, or industrial infrastructure projects.
• Solid knowledge of electrical systems and medium/high‑voltage grid connections.
• Experience with BESS, power conversion, or renewable energy projects is a strong advantage.
• Proven track record reviewing designs against specs and grid codes.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
• Fluent in English; willingness to travel between sites, suppliers and contractors.

With Vopak and the BESS developer Green Energy Storage joining forces, we’re accelerating the energy transition by deploying utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across the Netherlands and internationally. In this position, you will be employed directly by Green Energy Storage B.V. (GES) and based at our BESS headquarters in Breda.

To strengthen our Engineering team we are looking for an experienced Lead Engineer. Ready to take technical ownership of some of the largest BESS projects in the Netherlands and abroad, from design through construction and commissioning, and to set the engineering standards for our expanding portfolio? What will you do?

As Lead Engineer you will be the technical authority in the project team for our BESS projects, including the largest sites currently under construction in the Netherlands. You own the technical integrity of the project from design through construction, commissioning, and handover, and make sure that what we build is safe, compliant, and performs as intended.

Your focus is balanced between design ownership and hands-on technical coordination. You define and guard the technical requirements, review and challenge the designs of Tier-1 BESS integrators, Balance of Plant (BoP) contractors, and high-voltage specialists, and manage the interfaces between battery system, power conversion, transformers, grid connection, civil works, and control systems and energy management systems. At the same time, you provide the technical input for permits, tenders, and variations, and you coordinate the work of specialist engineers and external consultants.

What does your day look like?

Operating closely with Project managers, contracts & procurement, and on-site construction teams, your key responsibilities include:

• Own the technical requirements, design basis, and specifications of the project. Lead design reviews of single-line diagrams, site layouts, and basic and detailed designs.
• Manage the technical interfaces between the BESS, BoP, high-voltage, and grid connection scopes, and work with the grid operator on grid code compliance and connection requirements.
• Provide technical input for environmental and spatial permits, tender documents, bid evaluations, and the assessment of variation requests and contractor claims.
• Safeguard quality and safety in design and execution, including fire safety, permit conditions, factory and site acceptance tests (FAT/SAT), and commissioning.
• Guide the project from design into construction, take the lead on technical issues on site, and ensure handover to operations with complete as-built documentation.
• Follow developments in battery technology and grid connections, translate lessons learned into design standards and technical guidelines for the next projects, and coach fellow engineers.

You are analytical, precise, and practical, with a passion for technology and renewable energy. You are comfortable taking technical decisions, explain complex issues clearly to non-engineers, and enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team where technical and commercial interests need to be balanced.

• 8+ years of engineering experience in energy, high-voltage, or industrial infrastructure projects, including a senior or lead role during design and construction.
• Solid knowledge of electrical systems and medium- and high-voltage grid connections. Experience with BESS, power conversion, or renewable energy projects is a strong advantage.
• Proven track record of reviewing contractor and supplier designs against specifications, standards, and grid codes, and of working with EPC contractors. Working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar software.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• Fluent in English. Command of other languages are naturally a plus.
• Willingness to travel between sites, suppliers and contractors.
