Job summary

Deltares is seeking a Junior Advisor / Researcher Hydrodynamics in Delft, Netherlands. You will work at the interface of science, modelling and real-world applications, translating data and physics-based insights into practical solutions for national and international water challenges.

Responsibilities include developing models like Delft3D-FM, analysing datasets with Python, improving workflows (HPC, cloud, containers, ML), and supporting client-facing project delivery and proposals.

Qualifications

MSc degree in Civil Engineering, Coastal Engineering, Oceanography, or related field.
Experience with numerical modelling of physical systems.
Understanding of coastal and ocean processes such as tides, storm surges, turbulence, stratification, and air-sea interaction.
Experience with programming or scripting (Python).
Good communication skills in English (Dutch is an advantage).
Experience with hydrodynamic or morphodynamic models such as Delft3D, D-HYDRO, SOBEK or similar tools.

Responsibilities

Develop, validate, and apply numerical hydrodynamic models for coastal and marine systems (e.g. Delft3D-FM).
Process, analysing, and visualising hydrodynamic and environmental datasets using Python.
Contribute to the improvement of modelling methodologies and workflows, including cloud computing, HPC, containers, and machine learning.
Support project delivery through report writing, presentations, and occasional client interactions.
Contribute to proposal writing and project acquisition.
Build internal and external collaborations and expand your professional network.
