Job summary

Philips is offering a Packaging Innovation Internship focused on research, concept development and prototyping for six months, starting September/October. A thesis is possible and you’ll explore new materials, sustainability, and consumer packaging experiences.

You will perform research on trends, translate findings into insights, create and visualize concepts, build physical prototypes in the Philips workshop, and share learnings with the global Packaging Design team.

Qualifications

• You are studying towards your Bachelor or Master in Industrial Product Design or related study.
• Strong organizational and structured thinking skills.
• Interest in packaging innovation.
• Analytical mindset with attention to detail.
• Proactive attitude and willingness to learn in a cross-functional environment.
• Comfortable using PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook; Prototyping (3D printing), 3D CAD, Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop.

Responsibilities

• Packaging Innovation Research: research trends in packaging design, sustainability, materials, manufacturing technologies, consumer experience, and retail presentation.
• Concept Development: create structural packaging concepts inspired by emerging trends and technologies; develop visualizations, mock-ups, and concept proposals.
• Prototyping & Validation: design and build physical prototypes; test concepts and gather feedback; present findings to stakeholders.
• Knowledge Building: capture innovations and lessons learned; share findings with the global Packaging Design team.

Packaging innovation moves rapidly, with new materials, manufacturing technologies, sustainability solutions, and consumer expectations emerging every year. While Philips actively monitors these developments, there is often limited opportunity to bring these innovations to life through tangible concepts and prototypes.

You Are Responsible For

Packaging Innovation Research

• Research trends in packaging design, sustainability, materials, manufacturing technologies, consumer experience, and retail presentation.
• Benchmark innovative packaging solutions from inside and outside the consumer electronics industry.
• Investigate emerging material technologies and assess their potential relevance for Philips.
• Translate research findings into actionable insights and opportunities for future packaging development

Concept Development

• Create structural packaging concepts inspired by emerging trends and technologies.
• Explore how innovative materials, finishes, graphics, and structures can be combined into compelling future packaging experiences.
• Develop visualizations, mock-ups, and concept proposals.
• Support ideation workshops and innovation sessions within the Packaging team.

Prototyping & Validation

• Design and build physical prototypes using the Philips packaging workshop and available prototyping equipment.
• Test concepts and gather feedback from stakeholders and users.
• Document learnings, opportunities, and recommendations.
• Present concepts and prototypes to packaging designers, engineers, marketing teams, and management.

Knowledge Building

• Capture innovations, concepts, and lessons learned in a structured way.
• Help build a knowledge base that can support future Philips packaging innovations and standards.
• Share findings with the global Packaging Design team.

We Offer You

A non-stop growth opportunity within a global multinational company. In addition, we also want to renumerate you well for the opportunity. This includes:

• Monthly full-time allowance between €500 - €700 gross, depending on your education level and if you need to relocate to The Netherlands. Part-time internships receive the allowance pro-rata.
• Housing compensation. Should you need to relocate to near our office, we’ll offer you a monthly allowance of €300,- net if location is in the vicinity of Amsterdam, €255,- net for all other Philips locations. To be eligible, we’ll just ask for the rental contract from your landlord, and your usual home-work travel distance needs to be more than 50 km or 1.5 hours of travel time (for a one way trip).
• Travel compensation, if you are not eligible for a free public transport card; you will receive max. €192,- net as a monthly allowance.
• Paid holidays per internship term.
• The opportunity to buy Philips products at our Philips shop.
