Job summary

Sibelco Maastricht is seeking a Geotechnician to conduct field monitoring and laboratory testing at our mining and quarry sites. The role covers geotechnical, hydrological and environmental measurements, with installation and maintenance of monitoring equipment and sample handling.

You will perform surveying tasks with drones, GPS, total stations, and leveling instruments while ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

• Experience in surveying, laboratory testing, and field monitoring is preferred.
• Valid driver's license required.
• English and French – proficient verbal and written communication; basic Dutch/German an advantage.

Responsibilities

• Perform field monitoring at mines and quarries, including geotechnical, hydrological and environmental measurements.
• Install, maintain and inspect monitoring equipment (inclinometers, piezometers, etc.).
• Collect, prepare and transport field samples according to procedures.
• Ensure data is accurately recorded and reported.
• Perform soil, rock and water testing per laboratory standards.
• Support QA/QC activities and maintain testing records.
• Conduct basic surveying using drones, GPS, total stations and levelling instruments.

Together, we can shape the future.Job Description:Geotechnical & Hydrological MonitoringConduct field monitoring activities at mines and quarries, including geotechnical, hydrological and environmental measurements.Install, maintain and inspect monitoring equipment such as inclinometers, piezometers and other monitoring devices.Collect, prepare and transport field samples according to established procedures.Ensure monitoring data is accurately recorded and reported.Laboratory OperationsPerform soil, rock and water testing in accordance with laboratory standards and procedures.Prepare samples and maintain laboratory equipment.Support quality assurance and quality control activities within the laboratory.Maintain accurate testing records and documentation.Surveying & Site MeasurementPerform basic surveying activities using: Drone systems, GPS equipment, Total stations (tachymeter), Levelling instruments, InclinometersConduct blasting vibration monitoring when required.Process and organize survey data for engineering review.Field Support & Project ExecutionSupport geotechnical investigations and site assessments across Sibelco operations.Assist geotechnical engineers and mining engineers in field projects.Participate in site inspections and monitoring campaigns.Support deployment of new monitoring technologies and equipment.Health, Safety & ComplianceComply with all Sibelco safety requirements and field procedures.Ensure work is conducted safely in mines, quarries and field environments.Report hazards, incidents and unsafe conditions promptly.Maintain compliance with laboratory and field quality standards.Equipment ManagementMaintain field and laboratory equipment in good working condition.Coordinate calibration, maintenance and repairs of instruments.Manage inventory of sampling and monitoring equipment.Technical CapabilitiesGeotechnical Monitoring: Basic understanding of monitoring systems and instrumentationLaboratory Testing: Soil, rock and water sample preparation and testingSurveying: Basic surveying techniques and equipmentData Management: Accurate recording and reporting of technical dataEquipment HandlingOperation and maintenance of field and laboratory instrumentsIT skills: MS Office and basic technical softwareEducational Background and prior professional experienceDutch MBO Level 3/4 or equivalent vocational qualification in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical discipline.Experience in surveying, laboratory testing, field monitoring, mining, quarrying, construction, or a similar technical environment is preferred.Experience operating surveying, monitoring, or laboratory equipment is an advantage.Valid driver's license required.Specialized geotechnical monitoring and laboratory training will be provided by Sibelco.Language requirementsEnglish and French – proficient verbal and written communication skills required to effectively interact with site personnel and project teams across Western Europe.Basic knowledge in Dutch and German are an advantageEmployee Type:Freelancer/External ConsultantWhy Join Us?Sibelco is more than a workplace—it’s a community that encourages growth, innovation, and collaboration.
