Job description

Jouw functie

Are you curious, creative, and always looking for the story behind the story? We are looking for an enthusiastic Student Editor to join our research institute and help turn science into engaging and inspiring content to share within our research community and through our channels.

A lot is happening within our research institute. Our researchers are working on interesting, relevant, and sometimes surprising research projects. These projects hold stories that deserve to be told. Your challenge is to uncover these stories and turn them into content that informs and inspires our international research community.

Our science communicators focus on translating the results and impact of our research for external audiences. Your focus will be different: the people, practices, ideas, and stories behind research, for our own research community and our own channels, such as the weekly research newsletter and LinkedIn.

What will you do?

As a Student Editor, you will actively look for interesting stories within our research institute. You will talk to researchers, discover what makes their work interesting, and think about the best way to tell each story.

  • an interview;
  • a vlog or blog;
  • a post for our newsletter or LinkedIn account;
  • a behind-the-scenes story;
  • or a creative format that you come up with yourself.

Where possible, you will take ownership of a story from the initial idea to a publication-ready concept. This means that you will not only write content, but also contact researchers, plan interviews, follow up on agreements, and keep track of deadlines.

English is the working language of our research community. You will therefore write and edit content in English, and you will be able to translate scientific topics into clear, accessible, and engaging stories that make our researchers excited about what is happening across the institute.

Where relevant, you may also support our PhD editorial, for example by helping develop story ideas, editing content, coordinating productions, or working together with PhD editors on joint stories.

Jouw werkplek
Where will you work and with whom?

You will work from within the research institute, close to the people and activities that can lead you to interesting stories and researchers.

To identify potential topics, you will regularly join:

  • the weekly team meeting of the research institute;
  • the weekly editorial meeting for the research newsletter;
  • and, where relevant, the monthly meetings or activities of the PhD editorial.

You will work closely with the institute's communication team and with our PhD editorial: a team of PhD candidates who contribute to communication within our research community alongside their own research.

You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with communication advisers, science press officers, and other communication professionals across Radboudumc.

Jouw profiel
Who are you?
  • You are pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree, for example in communication, journalism, media, or a related field, or you are studying a scientific discipline and have a minor or background in communication.
  • You have an affinity for communication, writing and content creation.
  • Preferably, you already have some experience with writing, interviewing, editorial work, or content creation, for example through your studies, student media, an internship, your own projects, or a portfolio. You are interested in science and research and enjoy exploring new topics.
  • You are interested in science and research and enjoy quickly familiarizing yourself with new topics.
  • You have a journalistic mindset: you are curious, ask good questions, know when to probe further, and can recognise what makes a topic an interesting story.You are a good listener and know how to identify the essence of a story.
  • You can independently pick up an assignment and take responsibility for moving it forward.
  • You write clearly, accessibly, and engagingly in English, and feel comfortable interviewing researchers in English.
  • You are able to understand complex scientific topics and make them accessible without oversimplifying them.
  • You have a good command of English, both written and spoken.
  • You enjoy thinking about different formats and communication channels.
  • You are independent and proactive, and you are not afraid to approach researchers yourself.
  • You have a fresh perspective and enjoy experimenting with new ideas.
  • Experience with video, photography, social media, or visual content is a plus, but not a requirement.
What do we offer?

A varied student position within an international research environment, where you can gain valuable experience in science, communication, and content creation.

You will have the opportunity to work independently on stories, experiment with new formats, and bring your own ideas to life. You can build a portfolio while working closely with PhD editors and experienced communication professionals within Radboudumc.
