Job description

We are looking for a Data Steward to support data management activities across our research studies and help ensure that research data is well-structured, reliable and FAIR. In this role, you will work closely with researchers and contribute to the collection, curation and standardisation of diverse data types. Are you passionate about making research data more accessible and reusable, and eager to contribute to high-quality translational cancer research? Then we look forward to hearing from you!

The Netherlands Cancer Institute is an internationally recognised centre of scientific excellence. Research is focused on early detection of cancer, improving cancer treatment through imaging and molecular diagnostics, new medicines, improved operating techniques, more effective radiotherapy and combinations of these, epidemiology and psychosocial research.
The Translational Gastrointestinal Oncology (TGO) group focuses on colorectal cancer research, with emphasis on discovery, validation and implementation of biomarkers for early detection (screening, surveillance), prognosis and response to therapy. This involves omics-based tumour profiling, using DNA-, RNA- and proteomics-based techniques, in order to stratify patient groups and arrive at individual tailored therapies. The group is also heavily involved with Health-RI, the interconnected infrastructure for personalised medicine & health research in the Netherlands and support for the national data-integration platform cBioPortal, and making translational research data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable).

Your role

As a data steward within our group, you will be involved with FAIR data management activities. You’ll aid researchers with the collection, checking, curating and structuring of different data types, and will contribute to standardising and automating data flows for multiple studies.

Why the Netherlands Cancer Institute?

Science is at the heart of everything we do at the NKI. But breakthroughs don't happen through science alone; they happen through people – curious minds, bold thinkers, people who challenge assumptions and turn complex questions into meaningful discoveries. Around 600 scientists, together with 150 scientific and 150 administrative professionals, work here across the full spectrum of cancer research, from fundamental science to clinical innovation. With roughly 55 nationalities represented, we form a vibrant international community where English is our shared language and every voice carries equal weight. Our institute sits just 15 minutes by bike from the heart of Amsterdam.

Vereisten

We seek to recruit an ambitious candidate, preferably holding a MSc or PhD degree, capable of independent thinking, with a proactive attitude and a strong commitment to translational cancer research and implementation in daily clinical practice. You will be working in a multi-disciplinary multi-centre environment and on several unique research projects and will therefore need excellent communication skills. Further knowledge and skill requirements include:

  • A BSc or MSc in a biomedical science related field
  • Experience with data management, including validation checks and generating summary statistics
  • Experience with Electronic Data Capturing systems
  • Programming skills (bash/R/python)
  • Experience with creating (and using) databases (Mongo/SQL)
  • Design and implementation of sustainable, standardized data workflows between different systems

It’s a plus if you have experience with:

  • Clinical trials or translational research studies
  • Previous data management experience in a hospital setting
  • Digital pathology/radiology systems and respective data models
  • Biobank systems and data models
  • Knowledge of FAIR principles and metadata standards
