Your function

In this position, you will work closely with the Senior Data Steward and Secretary of the Ethics Review Board to support researchers throughout the research lifecycle and contribute to a culture of research integrity, open science, and compliance. In addition, you will also collaborate with other support staff from the VU Library, IT, Legal Affairs and Grants office.

As a Data Steward, you will advise and support researchers, PhD candidates, and research staff on all aspects of research data management, open science, privacy legislation and research ethics compliance. You will help ensure that research data are managed responsibly, securely, and in accordance with national and institutional policies, ethical standards, and applicable legislation.

Working alongside the Senior Data Steward and Secretary of the Ethics Review Committee, you will contribute to the development and implementation of policies, procedures, tools, and support services that facilitate high-quality research within SBE and the VU at large.

You will be part of the SBE Research Office. The Research Office supports the School's research community by providing expertise and services in research funding, project management, ethics, research integrity, data management, open science, research and PhD policy. The office works closely with researchers and faculty leadership to create the conditions for high-quality, impactful, and responsible research.

Your duties

  • provide advice and guidance to researchers on research data management throughout the research lifecycle
  • support researchers in the preparation and review of Data Management Plans (DMPs)
  • advise on the secure storage, sharing, publication, and archiving of research data
  • promote the application of FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) and open science
  • support compliance with privacy legislation, including GDPR, institutional and national policies. This includes support with the preparation of privacy statements, data-processing agreements and data protection impact assessments
  • develop and deliver training sessions, lectures, workshops, and guidance materials on research data management and research ethics for researchers, as well as PhD and master students
  • collaborate with the Senior Data Steward and University Library staff on implementing and further developing data stewardship services within SBE and the VU
  • serve as a point of contact for researchers seeking advice on data-related and ethical aspects of research
  • monitor developments in research data management, research ethics, open science, and privacy legislation and translate these into practical recommendations for the faculty
  • participate in institutional and national networks on research data management, open science and research ethics
Your profile
  • a completed Master's degree, preferably in a relevant field
  • knowledge of research data management, data privacy regulations, and academic research processes
  • affinity with scientific research and the academic environment
  • understanding of or interest in research ethics and research integrity
  • strong advisory and communication skills
  • excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail
  • ability to work independently and take initiative
  • a proactive, service-oriented, and collaborative mindset
  • excellent command of English, both written and spoken. A good command of Dutch is desirable but not a requirement

What do we offer?

  • a salary of minimum € 3.706,00 (Scale 10) and maximum€ 5.760,00 (Scale 10) gross per month, on a full-time basis. This is based on UFO profile Data Steward 4. The exact salary depends on your education and experience.
  • a position for at least 0.4 FTE. Your employment contract will initially last 1 year.Afterwards, there is a prospect of a permanent contract.

  • A full-time 38-hour working week comes with a holiday leave entitlement of 232 hours per year. If you choose to work 40 hours, you have 96 extra holiday leave hours on an annual basis. For part-timers, this is calculated pro rata.
