Job summary

Van Oord is seeking an experienced Communications Advisor within its Dredging & Infra business unit. You will connect the business with Stakeholders & Sustainability (STS), translating societal and political developments into strategic communications for internal and external audiences.

You will develop plans, advise diverse stakeholders, and contribute to implementation in a dynamic, international project environment, with Dutch and English language excellence as a must.

Qualifications

Job description

For our Dredging & Infra business unit, we are looking for an experienced Communications Advisor who connects the business with our Stakeholders & Sustainability (STS) department, where communications, public affairs, stakeholder management and sustainability come together.

You will develop communications and stakeholder plans, advise internal and external stakeholders and translate societal, political and reputation-sensitive developments into clear communications and practical advice. You will combine strategic insight with a hands‑on approach, providing advice while actively contributing to its implementation.

We are looking for someone with broad experience in communications who enjoys working in a dynamic, international project environment. You understand the political and societal context in which we operate and can easily switch between a wide range of stakeholders, from project teams and clients to government bodies, local stakeholders, the media and civil society organisations.

You are an experienced Communications Advisor who can provide independent advice and quickly switch between topics, audiences and communication channels. You feel at home in a complex, project-driven and international environment and are a trusted and confident sparring partner for the business, colleagues across different disciplines and external partners.

You are proactive, pragmatic and results-oriented. You connect people easily and write clearly, engagingly and with your audience in mind. You understand the societal and political context surrounding climate adaptation and infrastructure and know how to bring together the interests of different stakeholders.

You also bring:

• A completed bachelor’s and/or master’s degree, preferably in communications.
• Extensive experience as a Communications Advisor in a corporate, business‑to‑business or business‑to‑government environment.
• Broad experience in communications. Experience in a technical, infrastructure, project-driven or international sector is an advantage.
• An understanding of the political and societal context surrounding climate adaptation, water safety, spatial development and sustainable infrastructure.
• The ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, from project organisations and clients to government bodies, local stakeholders and the media.
• Excellent written and spoken Dutch and English.
• Strong organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain oversight and bring people, content and communication tools together effectively.
• A willingness to collaborate with colleagues, actively involve relevant areas of expertise and build support.

Through your communications approach, you will make complex topics such as climate adaptation, coastal protection, water safety and sustainable infrastructure understandable, relevant and visible. You will bring focus to key messages, identify opportunities and risks and ensure that communications help build trust, encourage engagement and strengthen Van Oord’s position.

You will do this by:

• Developing communications and stakeholder plans that align with the business unit’s priorities.
• Translating strategic topics into clear messages for different internal and external audiences.
• Managing communications projects from start to finish, including planning for trade fairs, events and external engagements.
• Creating copy, content and visual materials that communicate the intended message effectively.
• Coordinating communications tools and aligning project and programme schedules through the communications calendar.
• Identifying political and societal developments at an early stage and translating them into practical communications and stakeholder strategies.

YOUR WORKPLACE

You will join Van Oord’s Stakeholders & Sustainability department. Within STS, communications, public affairs, stakeholder management and sustainability work together to strengthen Van Oord’s positioning, both internally and externally.

You will work closely with colleagues within STS and the Dredging & Infra business unit, most of whom are based in Rotterdam. You will therefore regularly work from our Rotterdam office. You will also be willing to travel occasionally to relevant trade fairs, events and project locations, including abroad.
