Location: Near Maastricht Airport, The Netherlands (Mainly On site).

DESCRIPTION

We are seeking an experienced C++ Programmer to join a cutting‑edge air traffic management project. This next‑generation automation system provides advanced tools for air traffic controllers, including conflict detection, resolution, and trajectory‑based automation, ensuring safe and efficient operations in upper airspace.

As a C++ Programmer, you will be part of the Surveillance Data Processing (SDP) team within the Engineering domain. Your responsibilities will include designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining high‑performance, safety‑critical software in a Linux environment, working closely with technical and operational experts.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Collaborate with technical and operational experts to research, design, develop, implement and integrate new ARGOS functionalities used by air traffic controllers.
  • Analyse requirements with operational stakeholders and propose robust software solutions that address business and safety needs.
  • Design and implement complex software changes in modern C++, including:
    • algorithm design and optimisation.
    • prototyping and proof‑of‑concept work.
    • code implementation and refactoring.
    • unit and component testing.
    • contribution to automated test suites.
  • Work within a Linux (RHEL‑based) soft real‑time environment, paying close attention to performance, determinism and worst‑case execution time.
  • Investigate and resolve problem reports, including debugging, root cause analysis and corrective changes to existing source code.
  • Participate actively in code reviews (both as author and reviewer), ensuring compliance with internal C++ coding standards and safety/quality requirements.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and lifecycle artefacts, including design descriptions, test specifications and reports.
  • Support or contribute to safety and security assessments as required by the project.
  • Estimate, plan and deliver work packages, providing realistic effort estimations and progress updates to the team.
  • Work closely with other developers, testers, engineers and operational experts in a multi‑disciplinary, multicultural environment.
Technical skills
  • Strong proficiency in modern C++ (STL, templates, memory management, multi‑threading where applicable).
  • Experience developing on Linux (command line tools, build systems, debugging tools, shell basics).
  • Solid understanding of data structures and algorithms, and their performance implications.
  • Experience with unit testing and automated testing frameworks (e.g. Google Test, Robot Framework or similar).
  • Familiarity with version control and collaborative development workflows (e.g. Git).
Desirable skills
  • Experience with AGILE / iterative development methods.
  • Practical experience with Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket) or similar ecosystems.
  • Hands‑on experience with test automation frameworks, particularly Robot Framework.
  • Experience in safety‑critical or real‑time systems (e.g. aerospace, automotive, rail, industrial control).
  • Understanding of Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems, air traffic control operations or aviation in general.
  • Previous experience in large international or multicultural technical teams.
Security and compliance
  • Appointment is subject to obtaining an official Certificate of Good Conduct (or equivalent) from your country of residence, issued within the required timeframe.
