Job summary

Optics11 Life in Amsterdam is seeking a Biomedical Scientist to bridge biology and applied instrument development. You will define key applications, advise on feasibility, and contribute to the roadmap with product managers and the department head.

The role involves designing and executing projects to develop assays and protocols, generating scientific material for mechanobiology and muscle biology, and collaborating across R&D, product management and external partners.

Qualifications

  • MSc or PhD in cell biology or related field.
  • Extensive experience with cell culture, preferably with 3D models.
  • Familiarity with mechanobiology and/or muscle biology is a strong advantage.
  • Experience with engineered micro-environments for cell cultures (incl. Hydrogels, ECM).
  • Willingness to work flexibly between headquarters and our offsite biolab in Amsterdam. Occasional weekend work may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop assays and protocols based on the Application Roadmap.
  • Manage, contribute and/or execute collaboration projects with Academia / Industry.
  • Generate customer-facing scientific material.
  • Provide input to R&D on HW / SW / UX improvements for specific applications.
  • Execute internal validation of new developments and applications.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

The Biomedical Scientist is crucial in the realization of our strategy; it bridges the gap between the technology developed by R&D and the biological applications that bring value to our customers.

You will contribute to defining key applications and advise on the feasibility of biological projects, shaping the Application roadmap co-developed with the product managers and the department head.

As well as design and execute projects to develop assays and protocols and produce scientific material focused on key applications in mechanobiology and muscle biology.
The Biomedical Scientist approaches this work with a positive mindset, driving progress even when projects are complex or ambiguous.

  • MSc or PhD in cell biology or a related field (bio(medical) engineering/technology, biomedical sciences, with extensive practical laboratory experience;
  • Extensive experience with cell culture, preferably with 3D models (e.g. 3D engineered muscle tissues, spheroids, organoids);
  • Familiarity with mechanobiology and/or muscle biology is a strong advantage;
  • Experience with 3D engineered muscle tissues formation for contractility applications is a plus;
  • Experience with engineered micro-environments for cell cultures (incl. Hydrogels, ECM, etc) is a plus;
  • Willingness to work flexibly between our headquarters and our offsite biolab in Amsterdam. Occasional work at the weekend might be required (time-for-time compensated)
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English;
  • Capable of working autonomously with a team-oriented and positive mindset.
  • Comfortable communicating and collaborating across R&D, product management, commercial team and external partners.
