Job description

Job description

The Power Electronics Group at the University of Twente is seeking an outstanding Assistant or Associate Professor to strengthen its internationally recognised research and education activities in modern power electronic systems.

You will develop an independent research line that complements and strengthens the existing expertise of the group, supervise PhD and MSc researchers, contribute to teaching in Electrical Engineering, and initiate and lead externally funded research projects. You will work closely with academic and industrial partners and contribute to the development of next-generation power electronic systems for energy, transportation, aerospace and industrial applications.

Your profile

We are looking for candidates with:

  • A strong research profile in power electronics, with knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Power electronic converter design and control;
  • Advanced modulation and control strategies;
  • High-frequency and high-power-density power conversion;
  • Power electronics hardware design, prototyping, and experimental validation;
  • Wide-bandgap power semiconductor technologies, including SiC and GaN;
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning for power electronics;
  • Digital twins, condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, and predictive maintenance;
  • Space power electronics and aerospace power systems;
  • Electrified transportation, renewable energy, battery systems, and DC power distribution;

Furthermore, you:

  • A PhD degree, or a PhD degree to be completed before the start of the appointment, in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Power Engineering, or a closely related field, together with a strong research track record demonstrated through publications in reputable international journals and conferences.
  • Experience in, or clear potential for, developing an independent research line and acquiring externally funded research, including collaboration with industry, research institutes, governmental organisations, and academic partners.
  • Experience in university-level teaching and supervision, or clear potential to develop into an excellent academic teacher and supervisor at BSc, MSc, and PhD levels.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in an international and multidisciplinary academic environment, and an excellent command of English.
  • A University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) or equivalent qualification, or the willingness to obtain this qualification.
  • For appointment at Associate Professor level, a demonstrated track record of independent research leadership, PhD supervision, external research acquisition, and academic teaching is expected.
  • Industrial R&D experience, leadership of externally funded research projects, or a strong track record in translating research into industrial applications will be considered an advantage.
Our offer
  • We offer a fulltime structural position, starting with a temporary appointment with the prospect of a permanent position after a positive evaluation
  • Our terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Universities (CAO) and include a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3 %; depending on your relevant background and experience, the gross monthly salary on a full-time basis ranges from € 4.925,- to € 8.992,- per month (scale 11-14);
  • A minimum of 29 leave days in case of full-time employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A fulltime employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis;
  • We offer a family-friendly institution that offers parental leave (both paid and unpaid), free access to sports facilities on campus and excellent professional and personal development programs;
  • You will work in a lively, inspiring and dynamic working environment in an organisation focusing on internationalisation, where you will have a high degree of responsibility and independence.

About the department

The Power Electronics (PE) Group at the University of Twente conducts research and education on advanced power electronic systems and technologies. Our research spans the complete power conversion chain, from power semiconductor devices, converter topologies, modulation and control, magnetics and electromagnetic compatibility, to the design, prototyping, and experimental validation of complete power electronic systems.

Our research addresses both fundamental and application-oriented challenges in areas such as high-efficiency and high- power-density power conversion, wide-bandgap semiconductor technologies (SiC and GaN), advanced and intelligent control, artificial intelligence and machine learning for power electronics, digital twins, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. Important application domains include renewable energy and energy storage, electrified transportation, battery systems, DC power distribution and protection, aerospace and space power systems, and industrial power electronics.

The PE Group combines strong academic research with extensive experimental activities and maintains state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for the development and validation of power electronic converters and systems. We collaborate closely with leading industrial partners, research institutes, and universities in the Netherlands and internationally, and participate in a broad portfolio of national and European research projects.

You will join a large and growing international research environment involving academic staff, postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, and MSc students. The group offers opportunities to develop an independent research line, supervise talented researchers and students, contribute to high-quality education, and establish new collaborations with academic and industrial partners.

Our ambition is to contribute to the development of the next generation of efficient, reliable, resilient, and intelligent power electronic systems needed for the energy transition and the increasing electrification of society.

About the organisation

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) uses mathematics, electronics and computer technology to contribute to the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). With ICT present in almost every device and product we use nowadays, we embrace our role as contributors to a broad range of societal activities and as pioneers of tomorrow's digital society. As part of atech university that aims to shape society, individuals and connections, our faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad, and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. Our research has a high profile both in the Netherlands and internationally.
