Job description

For 23 years, I've sat in classrooms at "top" schools and kept hearing (and thinking): "When will I ever use this?", "____ is useless", or "I would rather watch a YouTube video than attend this class".

These days, families pay for a school's prestige or a teacher's CV rather than the quality of their delivery. But what determines quality? School rankings? PISA scores? Alumni results?

Over the past 14 years, I've helped students win over $1.5 million in private school music scholarships as a cello teacher. And it's not because of my CV.

I believe true education comes from a balance of three things: nurturing an excitement to learn, strong subject foundations, and a roadmap tailored to a child's desires. Have all three, and you get students who achieve things they initially thought were impossible.

That starts with paying great teachers like doctors and lawyers. Their unrelenting excitement for a subject and their passion to develop their pupils have life-changing effects. Great teachers shape a child's outlook, choices and belief in what's possible, long after they leave school.

You may think that it's impossible, given the state of education and teacher salaries. But it isn't.

When I started this online journey 15 months ago, I told myself: if consulting and law firms can earn 8-figures from Fortune 500 companies, then there are also families with substantial discretionary income. We just need to give them the choice and a reason to invest. So I gave them one.

Since then, I've grown my social media presence from 0 to 22k followers and now charge fees three times higher than the industry average, completely online.

With the right business model, intellectual property and offer, the mission is achievable.

I'm starting with what I know best: cello education. But WYDO (pronounced like saying "Why though") will become a global education company in all subject areas.

Within WYDO, I run The Cello Accelerator, a premium online cello coaching business for ambitious young cellists. We help students and their families make fast, real progress, and students taught with our methods have won over $1m in music scholarships. We work with families across the US, Australia and Asia.

You'll be a key player in executing the content waterfall, where one long-form piece of content is repurposed into shorts across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn and RedNote.

Here's how we will split the work. I own strategy, ideas, scripting, on-camera teaching and final creative sign-off. You will own the edit: long-form YouTube videos and the short-form clips we cut from each one. My executive assistant owns the content calendar, scheduling, posting and weekly reporting, so your time goes into making the work excellent.

Editing is core to this role, and it's the skill I'm hiring for. If you want to become an outstanding editor and stay one, there's a clear path for that. If you're also interested in the business side or becoming a Head of Content, there's room to grow in that direction too as the company grows.

Responsibilities
  • Edit long-form YouTube videos from my raw footage: structure, pacing, captions, on-screen text, B-roll and motion graphics
  • Cut to my style: clean, direct and focused on teaching
  • Help me develop our YouTube style, drawing on creators I admire such as Ali Abdaal, Matt Gray and Kallaway: pacing, structure, graphics and how we keep viewers watching, consistently updating our Editing SOP
  • Edit course and product videos when we launch new offers
  • Pick the strongest moments from each long-form video and cut them into Shorts, Reels and TikToks, with a strong hook in the first two seconds
  • Adapt each clip to its platform: length, aspect ratio, captions and pacing
  • Write first drafts of hooks, captions and titles for my approval
  • Listen critically to the cello audio and flag takes where the intonation, shifts, bow changes or sound aren't good enough
  • Suggest alternative takes or cuts so the playing on screen always meets the standard we teach
  • Learn our Editing SOP (our detailed rules for pacing, spacing, typography, B-roll, audio and formats) and apply it consistently in every edit
  • Turn my editing notes into new rules and keep the SOP up to date as our style develops
  • Keep a library of reference edits that show what good looks like
  • Review retention and drop-off data with the team every week
  • Bring clear notes on what worked, what didn't and what to test next: hooks, clip length, pacing and formats
  • Use AI tools such as Claude and Higgsfield to create motion graphics and speed up repetitive work
  • Deliver edits to our content calendar, and flag early if anything is blocked
  • Handle everything with discretion. Some videos may feature students under 18, and their families value privacy
  • Set the quality bar for, and review the work of, a short-form editor when we hire one
Roles
  1. Video Editor: long-form and short-form editing, audio quality checks and keeping the Editing SOP up to date
  2. Lead Editor: owns the Editing SOP and quality bar, chooses clips and hooks from the data, and reviews the work of a short-form editor
Progression
  • First 3 months: your edits need only one light round of notes, every edit is delivered on schedule, and the Editing SOP is updated with everything you've learned from my notes
  • 6 months: you choose clips and hooks yourself based on retention data, editing has fully moved off my plate, and long-form videos and clips go out every week without me touching them
  • 12 months: you own the Editing SOP and quality bar, we hit the weekly volume we set together, and you review the work of a short-form editor
Benefits
  • 𝗣𝗮𝘆: RM3,500 to RM5,500 a month, depending on experience (RM21.90 to RM34.40 an hour, for up to 160 hours a month). Paid in GBP or USD at the exchange rate. Invoiced monthly as an independent contractor
  • Stability: this is a long-term role, not project work. After the trial, you'll have a guaranteed monthly retainer paid on the same dates each month.

Each step comes with higher pay and more ownership. Progression depends on the business growing and on you consistently delivering work that needs fewer touchpoints from me.

Requirements
  • You have a strong video editing portfolio, including both long-form and short-form social content with motion graphics
  • You have edited for a creator or brand and can show the growth your work drove (views, retention, followers)
  • You play, or have played, a string instrument (cello, violin, viola or double bass) for at least 3 to 4 years, or have completed ABRSM exams. This is essential: you need to know what scales are and recognise bad intonation, as many videos require technical knowledge. The stronger the player, the better. Applicants without string playing experience will not be considered
  • You care about making education engaging
  • You have a natural eye for pacing, spacing and design. I can teach you my style, but not taste
  • You take a note once and apply it every time after
  • You use AI tools (such as Claude or Higgsfield) to work faster, or you're genuinely keen to learn them
  • You are reliable and committed, and want to grow with one team for the long term
  • You are discreet and trustworthy with sensitive information about young students and their families
  • You love learning and improving yourself
  • You can read and write Chinese (Simplified preferred) for our RedNote content
  • Some camera, lighting or audio recording experience
  • Experience with Notion or basic analytics

You’ll enjoy this if you like making things people learn from, you take pride in small details, and you want a role that grows with a growing business.

Career Path
  • Craft track: stay hands-on as our most senior editor, owning the look and feel of everything we publish
  • Leadership track: move into leading content, growth or a team of editors, working closely with me on strategy and the wider business
