FerroTec in Kedah, Malaysia seeks a Surface Treatment Engineer to develop, optimize, and maintain plating, anodizing, coating, and related processes. You will troubleshoot issues, drive continuous improvement, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance across operations.
The role collaborates with R&D, production, and quality teams to support new products and materials, while defining parameters and maintaining process control documentation.
The Surface Treatment Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and maintaining surface treatment processes—including plating, anodizing, coating, polishing, sandblasting, painting, and chemical treatments to ensure product performance, durability, and quality. This role involves troubleshooting process issues, implementing continuous improvement activities, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Develop, implement, and optimize surface treatment processes such as plating, anodizing, powder coating, painting, passivation, and chemical etching.
Conduct root cause analysis for surface defects (corrosion, peeling, roughness, contamination, discoloration, surface cracking).
Define process parameters, chemical concentrations, and equipment settings to achieve stable process output.
Collaborate with R&D, production, and quality teams to support introduction of new products and new materials.
Develop Work Instructions, SOPs, process control plans, and chemical handling guidelines.
Perform capability studies, process validation, and continuous improvement (Kaizen, 6σ, SPC).
Monitor and control chemical bath conditions, maintain chemical inventory, and manage chemical waste disposal in accordance with environmental regulations.
Lead troubleshooting of coating/plating equipment (bath tanks, spray equipment, ovens, conveyors, polishing machines).
Evaluate and qualify new chemicals, coatings, tools, consumables, and vendors.
Coordinate preventive maintenance activities to ensure process uptime and product consistency.
Ensure compliance with safety, ISO, RoHS, REACH, and other regulatory/industrial requirements.
Ensure compliance with relevant Environmental, Safety, and Health (ESH) legal and other requirements applicable to FTMM operations.
Support the implementation and continual improvement of the Quality Management System (QMS), Environmental Management System (EMS) and Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS).
Undertake other roles & responsibilities that are assigned by immediate superior from time to time.
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
Minimum 2-5 years experience in surface treatment, anodizing, electropolishing, plating or other surface finishing processes.
Strong knowledge of electrochemical processes, corrosion protection methods, and surface characterization.
Familiarity with coating equipment, plating baths, chemical management, and relevant industry standards.
Experience with SPC, PFMEA, DOE, and other engineering tools.
Good analytical, problem-solving, and project-management skills.
Safety-oriented mindset and understanding of environmental/chemical safety regulations.
