GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Accountable for providing professional nursing care to patients within a hospital unit, adhering to hospital policies, nursing services principles, and procedures to ensure high-quality care is practiced.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Organization and Management

Adhere to the nursing care vision, mission, goals and objectives; align with the scope of nursing services and perform shift duties as assigned by the Unit Manager to ensure high-quality care rendered. Notify the unit manager of any changes that may impact the standards of care. Obtain and hand over reports of patient progress, ensuring all doctor’s orders are followed before shift changes and reporting any incidents or problems. Visit patients with team members to assess conditions, revisit nursing care, and determine nursing priorities based on patient needs and staff availability.

Provide personalized, comprehensive care, ensuring meticulous documentation and prompt communication of abnormal findings. Provide exceptional critical care for severe conditions using advanced life‑support technologies such as mechanical ventilation, IABP, CRRT, pacemakers, and management of acute myocardial infarction. Conduct nursing rounds on patients, providing emotional support and accompanying doctors, and assist in procedures as needed. Execute doctor’s orders, coordinate with team members, and foster effective communication with all disciplines, patients, and relatives to ensure patient satisfaction. Deliver clear, compassionate, and culturally sensitive communication to ensure patients understand their condition, treatment options, and care plan.

Assist with patient transfers, inter‑service coordination, discharge procedures, scheduling specialist clinic appointments, handling death cases respectfully, and ensuring safe transfer to the mortuary. Collaborate with the unit manager in administration, setting care standards, and fulfilling duties in the manager’s absence while carrying out assigned tasks and providing feedback. Charge accurately, incorporating equipment and consumable charges into patient bills. Inspect and document the supply of sterile packs to maintain supply integrity.

Human Resource and Development

Maintain personal and professional growth by completing mandatory learning hours. Execute continuous professional development through annual competency evaluations and maintain privileges every three years. Perform cannulations and medication calculations proficiently. Participate in the unit’s teaching program and orientation of new staff and student nurses.

Supervise staff, including Assistant Nurses, Midwives, Care Assistants, and student nurses, achieving clinical attachment objectives. Evaluate staff performance, provide constructive feedback, and optimize staff, supply, and service utilization for efficient resource allocation. Participate in the development and maintenance of the nursing process and engage in research initiatives, advocating for quality improvement through evidence‑based practice.

Policies and Procedures

Review and revise nursing policies, procedures, and work instructions to promote best practices and continuous improvement. Inspect DDA drugs and adhere to policies in medication care. Audit resuscitation trolleys periodically. Promote infection prevention and control, ensuring staff follows protocols and monitors patients with appropriate care bundles. Maintain patient confidentiality of personal and medical history.

Facilities and Equipment

Operate and maintain specialized equipment, guiding new staff and maintaining accurate records. Conduct pre‑use checks on vital equipment such as ventilators to ensure safe and optimal functioning. Collaborate with the unit manager in maintaining equipment, supplies, and drugs per the PPM schedule. Notify biomedical personnel of faulty equipment and assist in instrument maintenance, cleaning, handling, disinfection, and usage. Participate in quarterly stock counts with finance staff.

Safety and Quality Improvement Activities

Support activities aimed at continuous improvement of nursing services, including quality assurance, infection control, and fire and safety programs. Investigate incidents, perform root cause analyses, and complete incident reports within the stipulated timeframe. Collect and evaluate clinical and administrative data. Participate in hospital‑wide surveys such as MSQH, JCI, IMS, and contribute to the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative certification. Adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Act and Regulations 1994 regarding work care, protective equipment, patient safety goals, and standard practices.

Job Requirements

Education: Registered with the Nursing Board of Malaysia with a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse; Post‑Basic qualification in a related field.

Knowledge and Experience: Registered Nurse with at least 3 years of diverse clinical experience.
